A police released photo of a shipment of fridges, which NT Police allege contained around 23kg of the drug ice. A haul of the drug ice worth more than $15m was found located in refrigerators. A West African crime syndicate has been named by police as being at the centre of the NT's largest-ever ice bust, with a Nigerian man charged after police found ice concealed in a shipment of fridges from Hong Kong. Key points:Police "acting on intelligence" intercept ice hidden in fridge doors and appliances at Darwin portShipment redirected to Sydney, with police tracking it to collectionMan, 51, arrested and charged in relation to what police say is $15m worth of ice

Police said they "acted on intelligence" and inspected a container shipment of electrical items from Hong Kong at Darwin's port on November 19, on the ship Dili Trader."Using X-rays, [we] detected anomalies in doors of fridges and subsequently located 23 kilos of substance which was later detected to be meth," Darwin-based Australian Federal Police Superintendent Mark Setter said."After further examination, approximately 27 packages were allegedly found within the fridge doors."Police said they would allege the packages contained a "white crystalline substance with a total weight of approximately 23 kilograms". Upon the discovery in Darwin, Superintendent Setter said the matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police and the joint taskforce Nemesis. He said the ice from the shipment was substituted with an "inert substance" and the packages allowed on their way, to an address in Sydney where it was "collected by two suspects who were surveilled by the AFP". More than 23kgs of the drug ice were found in the joint operation of NT and Federal Police and other agencies.

Around 10:00pm last night, Taskforce Nemesis officers executed a warrant at a Georges Hill address, with three people taken into custody, Superintendent Setter said. The consignment was redirected from Darwin by what police believed to be a West African crime syndicate, located in NSW.Following interviews, two of the people were released, with a 51-year-old Nigerian-born Sydney man charged with importing a commercial quantity of border control substance.Superintendent Setter said police "expected to make more arrests" in what he described as "the largest" seizure of the drug ice in the Northern Territory's history."The street value is estimated at $15.5 million ... it's the largest meth seizure for the NT. So we're particularly pleased to have taken these drugs off the street," he said.Superintendent Setter said 23 kilograms of the drug would have had "an enormous impact on families in the Australian communities".He said the maximum penalty for importing ice in that quantity was "life in prison".

NT acting assistant commissioner Kate Vanderlaan praised the cooperation of the several agencies involved in the operation. NT Police's Kate Vanderlaan and AFP's Mark Setter, at the press conference about the record $15 million ice seizure. "NT Police were heavily involved in this operation from the forensics, from our technical persons," she said.Ms Vanderlaan she said it was important "to make sure those drugs are intercepted at the border, rather than already in the community"."When you break it down, 23 kilos, a 1,000 grams per kilo, and then break it down to points, that's a lot of people that can buy drugs," she said. She said the relatively small size of Darwin's port, compared to Sydney's, was to the advantage of law enforcement authorities."Being a smaller port, we're better equipped to intercept those types of importations. Look at Sydney's entry points ... quite a lot larger than ours," she said. But Superintendent Setter said protecting Darwin was "no easier than anywhere else"."
