Oversized beanbag sofas are ideal for playrooms, casual family rooms or a media room. While a beanbag chair may be small for some adults, larger sofas can accommodate the whole family. Unfortunately, these larger cousins of the classic chair come with high price tags. You can make your own foam-filled beanbag sofa quickly and easily with basic sewing skills, sizing it to fit your space and family. Measure the space available in your home for your beanbag sofa. Foam-filled beanbag sofas are typically 6 to 8 feet in length and can be round or oval in shape. Determine the finished size and shape of your beanbag based on the space. Seam lengths of lining fabric to create panels wide enough and long enough for your desired beanbag shape. If you plan to make a round sofa 6 feet in diameter, seam two 45-inch widths of fabric together, each 2 yards long, for the front and back sides of the couch. Create a pattern for your beanbag sofa, drawing the pattern directly on your lining fabric.
Make a large circle or curve by tying a length of string to a pin on one end and a pencil on the other. The string should be the desired radius of your circle or, for an oval sofa, half circle. Pin the makeshift compass into place at the center of your fabric and draw the shape you need. Cut the circles or ovals out of the lining fabric. Sew the lining pieces with the outer or right sides of the fabric facing one another. Leave a 10- to 12-inch opening to fill the beanbag sofa with foam. Insert the cardboard tube into the sofa. Fill with foam until you've achieved the desired firmness. Remove the cardboard tube. Hand sew the opening in the beanbag sofa closed with upholstery thread and a sturdy needle. Sew two panels of outer fabric together to create the top of your beanbag sofa. The outer fabric cover and inner fabric lining should be the same size. Stitch heavy-duty hook and loop fastener completely across each panel to create the back closing of your bean bag.
You will need enough of the sew-on hook and loop tape to reach from one side of your bean bag sofa to the other side. Use the hook and loop to stick the two pieces together. Draw the same pattern for your bean bag sofa's outer cover as you did for the liner onto the wrong side of both the top and bottom of your cover. Cut out, working carefully over the heavy fasteners. Stitch the front and back together with the right sides of the fabric together. Turn right side out. Open the hook and loop and insert the filled bean bag sofa liner into the cover. Fasten the hook and loop to close. Look for a foam distributor in your area to buy shredded foam inexpensively. You can use the liner without a cover, but washability may be an issue.
