June 14, 2016 | Blessed with a loose, anarchic B-picture soul that encourages you to enjoy yourself even when you're not quite sure what's going on, the scruffy Guardians is irreverent in a way that can bring the first Star Wars to mind. September 30, 2014 | The lightly derisive, live-action-cartoon tone robs the movie of any majesty, even of the comic-book type, and the many violent deaths of their suitable gravity. These meager pleasures are swallowed up in all the frantic action and overblown CG sequences.

Chris Pratt, overflowing with charisma, plays the leader of the pack of misfits, and his blissed-out space cowboy (with a love for seventies music) is so full of good will that he buoys the film and its requisite whizbang special effects. Are you sitting down? You might want to be seated when you read this. You should also be warned of potential spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so if you’re the sort of Marvel fan who likes to go in knowing as little as possible (how do you live without the internet??), you might not want to read on. But if you’re curious to learn more about Baby Groot, James Gunn has revealed something very interesting, and a little sad? A few days back, Gunn took to Facebook for one of his regular Q&A sessions — you might have noticed a few articles about how he’s tired of being asked when we’ll see the first trailer, which is understandable since Kevin Feige already hinted that the trailer will premiere with Doctor Strange (and that’s just common sense, anyway). But there’s something that you might have missed if you didn’t read Gunn’s Q&A, which addressed some of his “REALLY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.” In addition to re-confirming that Vin Diesel is still doing Groot’s voice despite the character’s baby-size, Gunn revealed this little piece of info (emphasis mine): - Is baby Groot the same as Groot, or Groot’s son?

- Does he have Groot’s memories? - Does baby Groot stay baby Groot for all of Guardians Vol. 2? Haha look at that cute thing my cat is doing. - You're avoiding the question. What's your next question? When Marvel debuted the first Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 footage and trailer at Comic-Con, Kevin Feige was asked the same question. His response, via Collider: He remembers. He’s not mentally a baby, he is still Groot… I sort of equate it to Spock circa the end of Search for Spock and The Voyage Home. Which would mean that Baby Groot does retain Groot’s memories, but they’re fragmented and come back to him in bits and pieces. There’s an essential part of him that remembers because at his core, he is still Groot. But Gunn’s response runs counter to Feige’s own — it’s also more simple and direct, and doesn’t provide any further explanation. Maybe Baby Groot doesn’t have Groot’s memories at the beginning of the film, but they come back to him along the way?

Either way, it’s kind of heartbreaking to think that the teeny-tiny version of Groot has no recollection of all those wonderful moments from the first film — or his years of adventures with Rocket Raccoon. Anyhow, enjoy your cry for the day! Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017. Every Superhero Movie Post-Credits Scene, RankedUpdate: Following the weekend's Facebook mischief, Vin Diesel has elaborated on the Groot business (although there's still no actual mention of that actual name) and his dalliance with Marvel. So why a tree? "As an actor not everything you do has to be the obvious choice," he told the Press Association in Hollywood, "and sometimes the best thing you can do is defy expectations. If everyone expects you to go for this one thing [likely a reference to the popular assumption he'd be Thanos] and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it's interesting. And when it's interesting it's inspiring." Also inspiring to Vin was the concept artwork he's been shown, but it seems the clincher was the size of the role, allowing it to be slotted into his busy upcoming Riddick / Fast 7 schedule.

"The audience wanted Vin and Marvel, but I'm too busy to do a six-month role," he says. "What Marvel came up with was really interesting..." Vin Diesel has somewhere in the region of 45 million friends on his Facebook page, and enjoys nothing better than a gradual drip-fed news reveal. A couple of months ago he teased that he was going in to talk to Marvel about something secret, and in only-marginally-oblique style he appears to have let the tree out of the bag. A temporary change of his profile pic to one of an Ent-looking wood man would seem to indicate that he's to be Groot in Guardians Of The Galaxy. "I am Groot," he seems to be saying... and that's basically all he'll be saying if he has the role, since that's about the limit of the character's vocabulary. Possibly the last of his race, Groot is an alien plant monster who can regenerate himself from twigs. So he's a bit like Swamp Thing, if Swamp Thing worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. (or rather its space equivalent). In the comics he's battled Hulk and Thanos, and has a touching affiliation with Rocket Raccoon.

As we said, his sole line is "I am Groot" (although he gets a lot of expression on those words), but then we've only heard movie-Hulk say "Smash!" and "Puny God" so far, and we were fine with that. Assuming this is what's going on, it would not be Diesel's first turn as a taciturn animation, since he was Brad Bird's The Iron Giant back in 1999, which gives him voice-acting kudos for the rest of time. While it might sound like an easy gig for an expensive actor, just think of all the different nuances he can bring to this performance. He's probably practising with a tape recorder right now. We are, of course, still awaiting official confirmation on Groot's voice, and that of Rocket Raccoon - and there remains the question of Thanos, who's due to appear in the film in some (baddie) capacity and has also yet to be announced. James Gunn is the Guardians director, and the rest of his cast includes Chris Pratt, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Zoe Saldana, Benicio Del Toro, Glenn Close, Lee Pace, Dave Bautista and Ophelia Lovibond.
