Grand Designs owner puts 'stealth bomber' house at Pakiri on the market Scott Lawrie, a favourite participant from the first series of Grand Designs NZ, is putting his Pakiri house up for sale by tender. The house sits on a spectacular 1.6ha site with expansive views. Lawrie says he loves the house, but wants more space for his artworks and loves the idea of doing it all again. Special features of the living area include a red Sally Gabori painting and original Eames ply chairs. The large steel island is the piece de resistance in the open-plan living area. The steel island echoes the sculptural form of the house. Lawrie bought the stools from The Warehouse as a temporary measure but ended up keeping them because they were a perfect match. The alternate tread staircase maximises space. The staircase leads up to a writing studio that hangs out over the kitchen. Hexagonal tiles enliven this bathroom. Lawried finds the windows never get dirty because of the angles of the house: “The rain just washes it all off.”

Scott Lawrie's Grand Designs NZ project was a highlight of Series 1.The Scotsman and his dog Skippy dealt with building challenges, cows through the house and the inevitable cost overruns, and now he's about to do it all again. This week Lawrie is putting his "stealth bomber" house in Pakiri on the market to free up some of the equity. He admits it's a "hugely emotional" exercise. "It's like losing a limb, but I am being quite rational about it. I have run out of space for my art collection and I have ideas for a new house, hopefully in the same area." Floor-to-ceiling glazing maximises the sunlight and the views. Finding a plot may be difficult, however. Lawrie says he spent more than a year finding the first site, which has a spectacular view that can never be built out.READ MORE: * Grand Designs sculptural steel house steps outside the square * Grand Designs NZ: Where are they now? * Grand Designs NZ: Ambitious concrete house brings unseen challengesThe Scotsman says he has approached Mediaworks about the possibility of doing another Grand Designs project.

"I can't believe the response I have had from that programme. Appearing on a bloody TV show has changed everything – it has been a real eye opener. I was in Melbourne recently and the programme had just showed in Australia and I was approached in the street everywhere I went." Scott Lawrie says he has never been happier and is looking forward to his next big project. Lawrie says he is really happy with his steel house, which he spent more than a year planning with architect Paul Clarke. I have never been happier. There are mornings I wake up and sit in my undies outside with my coffee just watching the day unfold. Some days, I think I've died and gone to heaven."The branding consultant also admits sometimes he has to pinch himself because it is such a far cry from the small Scottish mining suburb where he grew up. "There were seven of us living in a tiny 80 square-metre state house. My dad was an alcoholic and my mum worked seven days a week."He says he never thought he would do it all again.

"But art is really important to me. I bought a new Dale Frank artwork and realised I have nowhere to hang it." Not surprisingly, Lawrie has some ideas he's been running past his architect – he wants the same building team to work on his new house as well. "He has had to tell me to slow down, because I don't even have a site yet, but I have all these ideas. I want the house to have a real sense of awe." Without giving too much away, Lawrie has his heart set on a shoebox concrete bunker-style house that is entered through the upper level. He envisages a long ramp entry on the inside, lined with artworks. He says his next house will be a gallery with a house attached, rather than a house with space for art."It will be minimalist, and probably quite brutalist in terms of the architecture. And there will be text elements etched into the concrete, because language is just as important to me as the art."No matter how it ends up, one thing is sure: Lawrie will continue to have an open-door policy.

"I am quite happy with my own company for several days, but I am also happy to have lots of people descending on the house on the weekends."Lawrie has listed his 145 square-metre, two-bedroom house with Barfoot & Thompson. He says it has been difficult for agents to put a value on the house that cost him nearly $1 million to build, not including the section, which he bought back in 2012.The house, which he has named The Crossing, is for sale by private tender, with tenders closing at 4pm, December 1 at Barfoot & Thompson Parnell.Skip to main content Skip to accessibility help , Red / Light Maple The new height of the iconic Vitra Eames DSW is ultra-stylish and beautifully comfortable in design, made from a moulded seat that's designed for every 'body', atop a sturdy maple base.
