Clopay spring systems are considered among the best in the industry. Here are some things to consider when comparing the safety of garage door springing systems. Clopay strongly recommends that only a trained garage door professional install standard torsion springs. Standard extension springs can also be tricky. If you choose to install extension springs on your own, carefully follow the instructions included with your garage door. Click here for installation manual. Clopay's EZ-SET® Spring Systems are designed to simplify the garage door installation process for do-it-yourselfers who have the confidence, tools and experience to tackle a project of this nature. EZ-SET Spring Systems include the EZ-SET Extension Spring System and the EZ-SET Torsion Spring System. EZ-SET is safer and uses common tools (3/8" drill) for installation versus the specialized tools required for standard spring systems. Both EZ-SET systems include an installation how-to video. Clopay extension springs come with a safety containment cable system that spans the entire length of the spring and prevents loose ends from causing damage or injury.

If your garage doors have extension springs, be sure they utilize a safety containment cable. Torsion springs are mounted on a shaft that acts as a containment system for that specific type of spring system. Many injuries occur when unqualified do-it-yourselfers attempt to remove or adjust the bottom bracket that connects the lifting cables to the spring system. This bracket is under extreme pressure. If it becomes loose, it can separate from the garage door's overall structure and cause injuries or property damage. Clopay's patented Safe-T-Bracket™ cannot be removed under normal circumstances until after the spring tension has been released. Clopay uses corrosion resistant galvanized torsion springs on its standard size residential doors. Simply put, they are more attractive and last longer than oil tempered springs. TYPES OF SPRINGING SYSTEMS Standard Extension Springs These are coiled springs installed above the door's horizontal track. Experienced do-it-yourselfer's can install these springs by closely following the installation instructions and safety warnings included with each Clopay garage door.

Standard Torsion Springs These include a shaft, spring and drum assembly installed directly above the door opening. The torsion spring distributes the garage door's weight evenly, which is critical with a wide and/or extremely heavy door. Standard torsion springs should only be installed and removed by a trained garage door professional. EZ-SET Spring Systems Clopay's EZ-SET Spring Systems are designed to simplify the garage door installtion process for do-it-yourselfers. Now the most difficult task of setting the spring tension can be accomplished with a 3/8" power drill in seconds. A user-friendly 45 degree drill input angle allows the installer to stand securely on the ground instead of on a ladder. This eliminates the need to manually lift the deadweight of an unsprung door. EZ-SET comes standard on select Clopay garage doors or it can be special ordered through a distributor. The EZ-SET Extension Spring System Clopay's patented EZ-SET Extension Spring System is designed with the do-it-yourselfer in mind, making installation simpler and safer.

Our unique system eliminates the need to manually lift the deadweight of unsprung garage doors. If you choose to install a door with extension springs, we recommend you use EZ-SET. The EZ-SET Torsion Spring System Once a job exclusively for trained garage door professionals, Clopay's EZ-SET Torsion Spring System makes torsion spring installation faster and easier for the do-it-yourselfer. Our system eliminates the difficult and dangerous manual winding process. And with this system there is no need to locate and prepare the center mounting pad!Lock-End Extension Spring (0.177 in. What can you do to keep your garage door running at peak efficiency? Replacement Parts Parts can be purchased through most garage door dealers or at The Home Depot. Clopay® garage doors are built to last, but some parts do occasionally wear out or become damaged. Virtually any component of the door can be replaced.

If you are reasonably handy and follow the instructions in your installation manual you can do some repairs yourself. Our replacement parts include: Rollers & Bottom Seal Hinges Lift Handles Windows & Inserts We recommend the following repairs be handled by a garage door repair professional: Springs Door Sections Track Operators Signs That It May Be Time to Replace Your Garage Door: Peeling or cracked paint. Wood garage doors will need to be refinished periodically in order to protect them from the elements. The painted or stained finish can break down over time, which causes the wood to rot. The finish can also discolor or fade due to UV exposure from the sun. If you find the wood has cracked, there are holes in your door or moisture has wicked up from the bottom, it is time to replace it.Steel garage doors can accumulate dents and small dings over time, which greatly detracts from the door's appearance. To help minimize unsightly dents, Clopay® garage doors are constructed with true 24, 25, or 27-gauge steel.

Thicker steel lasts longer and dents less. The lower the gauge, the thicker the steel. However, a "sandwich" constructed steel garage door with two 27-gauge steel skins and a bonded insulating core will be stronger than a "steel frame" door with a single layer of 24-gauge steel. With non-insulated garage doors you may be able to push out the dings from the inside of the doors. If you are unable to do this, you may need to replace the dented sections or the entire garage door. Clopay sells replacement sections for most models. Check with your local Clopay Dealer or Retailer for details. Sagging or bent garage door sections. Wood garage doors have a tendency to sag over time if they are not properly maintained. When the door is closed, you'll see large gaps under the ends of the door. If your wood garage door is sagging, we recommend replacing it. Door sections can also be damaged by an automatic opener if they are not adequately reinforced.Older garage doors or doors installed on new homes may not be well insulated or may not have full perimeter weatherstripping to seal out the elements.

An insulated, well sealed door is especially important if you have living space above or adjacent to the garage. The insulated garage door will help keep those rooms warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer, and can also help reduce energy bills. Clopay® offers insulated garage doors with R-values up to 17.2 (R-value is a measurement of thermal efficiency of a door, or how well it insulates) Click here for an overview of our products. Your door is excessively hard to open and close. Garage doors have a lot of moving parts, and if your door is opened and closed frequently, many of those parts will wear out. If your garage door springs are broken or improperly tensioned, the safety of your door is compromised, and your door will not function correctly. This condition will also put additional stress on your garage door opener, causing it to break or malfunction. Here are some components to check: Spring(s): Are they broken? You can test the spring tension of your door. If you have an automatic opener, close your door and pull the string on your opener to disconnect it.

Then open the door halfway. If it does not remain still, your spring(s) are either broken or need to be adjusted. Do not adjust or remove standard torsion springs yourself. Contact a qualified garage door repair professional. Cables: Are there any worn strips hanging loose on the sides of your garage door? Are the cables frayed? If so, they are in danger of breaking and could cause serious injury or property damage. Contact a garage door repair professional to replace the cables. Rollers: Do the rollers on the ends of your door move smoothly and quietly? If not, they may require lubrication or replacement. Clopay recommends a high quality nylon roller for the smoothest and quietest operation. Sections: Look for peeling or fading paint, rust or dented sections. Track: Are the tracks on either side of your garage door bent or twisted? Are they securely attached to the door jambs, and the ceiling via the rear track hangers? Hinges: Are the hinges that join the door sections bent or broken?
