How many other people can say that they’ve won a Tony on Broadway, appeared in one of the most iconic music videos of all time, starred alongside people like Robin Williams, Jim Carrey and Anne Hathaway — and graduated from clown college?

A 6-foot-tall man with a wide smile and a lanky body, Irwin impressed immediately when he graduated from Oberlin College in 1974 and attended Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, founding a San Francisco-based circus and training with them until the end of the decade. RELATED: Elmo or Oscar the Grouch – which ‘Sesame Street’ character are you? In 1980 he landed his first film role as the barely-speaking, elastic-like Ham Gravy in Robert Altman’s “Popeye.” Although it was a bomb at the box office, the film remains one of Hollywood’s  most legendarily runaway productions, and a generation of kids who grew up watching it repeatedly on HBO couldn’t take their eyes off that bizarre man in the background of so many scenes, contorting his body in the most amazing ways (Irwin is the guy Bluto puts through a chair in the clip below). By the mid-Nineties, Irwin had honed his acting skills in such diverse fair as the Charlie Sheen spoof flick “Hot Shots!”, the John Cusack baseball drama “Eight Men Out” and appearances on “Northern Exposure” and “The Cosby Show.”

But perhaps he was best known for another appearance that played off his physical, muted skills: Goofing alongside old friend Williams and Bobby McFerrin in the iconic “Don’t Worry Be Happy” video, a phenomenon of a song that became a #1 hit and won the 1989 Grammy for Song of the Year. But even if you want to skip all the way ahead to 2016 and his recent work in everything from “Sleepy Hollow” to “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” to his ironic voicing of the computer TARS in “Insterstellar,” you wouldn’t be addressing his greatest love: The theater. With “The Regard of Flight,” “Largely New York,” “Fool Moon,” “The Harlequin Studies” and “Mr. Fox: A Rumination,” Irwin created and performed Broadway and off-Broadway productions that combined clowning, music and acting. In 2005, he starred alongside Kathleen Turner in a revival of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, winning a Tony. Irwin has also acted on stage with Sally Field in “The Goat or Who is Sylvia,” and in everything from “Waiting for Godot” to “Bye Bye Birdie” and “King Lear.”

Despite such an awe-inducing resume, the role that would bring Bill Irwin his greatest fame would be one in which he wouldn’t say a word, and receive virtually no billing. In the 2009 book “Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street,” longtime “Sesame” writer Judy Freudberg explained the 1999 creation of Mr. Noodle. “[He] never speaks, and is all about trial and error,” she said. “When you throw him a hat, he acts like he’s never seen one before. Kids feel empowered watching him because they can do what he can’t.” Uniquely qualified, the nearly fifty-year-old Irwin cheerfully put on Mr. Noodle’s oversized tie and went to work — and in the years since has entertained and empowered countless children all over the world in languages that need no translation for his physical genius. Now 66, he will next be seen in the upcoming Owen Wilson film “Bastards.” For a man who is so often silent, Bill Irwin has certainly crafted a career that speaks volumes.
