Whether you’ve used it before or not, you’re probably at least familiar with the term and what it means. If not, here’s a quick primer: Find an item you want in a store (or online, in a handful of cases), pay a fee and/or a percentage of the price to put the item on hold, pay it off interest free within a designated time (usually between eight and 12 weeks) and the item is yours. Layaway became fairly common around the Depression and remained popular for decades, particularly among big-box retailers. Twenty to 30 years ago, the payment plan began to lose its luster (probably because of the accessibility of credit cards), and some stores like Walmart eventually discontinued their layaway programs altogether. But once the Great Recession hit and folks became more cautious about using their credit cards, layaway began to reappear. This holiday season, it’s back. And that’s great news for shoppers! What’s notable in recent years is that many retailers are waving their layaway fees around holiday time.
The fees, to my mind, acted as a barrier to entry unless you were purchasing a big-ticket item (because paying $5 to lay away a $2,000 laptop interest-free makes sense; a $50 item, not so much). Now some retailers are offering the benefit of layaway without the fees—for a limited time, anyway. Toys R Us/Babies R Us The program used to be available only during the holidays but is now available year-round. Payments can be made in-store or online. The layaway program is available at all Toys R Us stores and is available on everything except special orders, food, formula and clothing. It’s not just department stores that offer layaway. Due to legal restrictions, however, it is not available at GameStops in the District of Columbia or Maryland. Layaway at Kmart is available in-store and online. Payments can be made either way, but all pickups must be made in-store. Layaway is only available at select locations and is not available on certain items, like flammable products, magazines, prescriptions, cigarettes, photos and food.
Layaway merchandise will be returned to stock seven days after a missed payment. Layaway at Sears is available in-store and online, and payments can be made in either place. Pickups can be made in-store or they can be delivered. Layaway contracts can be cancelled at the store where you set up your contract. Contracts are automatically canceled after a seven-day grace period of missing your payment. Layaway has been available since September 2 and runs through December 12 this year. Payments can be made at any Walmart store. Individual items must be $15 or greater, and the total purchase must be $50 or greater. Final payment and pickup must be made on or before December 12 at the same store where layaway was initiated (or the order will be canceled). Layaway is available for electronics, toys, select sporting goods, small appliances and jewelry, but excludes wireless phones that require contracts. Some stores offer year-round layaway on jewelry purchases. Burlington Coat Factory and Baby Depot
Burlington Coat Factory and Baby Depot have restarted their holiday layaway plans. The service fee is $5, but customers will receive a $5 promotional card when they pay off their layaway by September 5, 2016. Marshalls offers layaway in some of its stores, and the merchandise must be paid off and picked up within 30 days. Use the store locator on the Marshalls website to locate a participating store near you (noted by a hanger icon). Layaway is not offered to items on markdown, jewelry, food and furniture. As of press time, there is no updated information available on T.J.Maxx layaway. Here is how it worked when we first reported this story in 2012. Be sure to call your local store for details. This Southern grocer offers layaway at its Plus! locations, which focus on non-food merchandise.
