Build a simple base that will outlast any flimsy metal frame with lumber and a few hand tools. It's a substantial base that can be taken apart as needed to move just about anywhere you desire. Stand the two 1 1/2-by-10-by-78 1/2 inch pieces of fir on their sides, parallel to each other. Place the two 1 1/2-by-54 1/2-inch pieces between the two 78-1/2 inch pieces, one flush at both ends. Drill four holes, evenly spaced, 3/4 inch from the edge of each corner of the 78-1/2 inch pieces with a 3/16 inch bit and drill/driver. Insert 3-1/2 inch screws in the holes with the drill/driver to create a rectangular box or base. The base will be 1/4 inch bigger on all four sides to prevent the mattress from fitting too tight. Place the 1 1/2-by-8-by-75 1/2-inch piece of lumber on its edge, centered inside the box. Drill four pilot holes through the 54-1/2 inch pieces, evenly centered, to penetrate into the ends of the 75-1/2 inch pieces. Place 3-1/2 inch screws in the holes and drive them in to secure the 54-1/2 inch center brace to the frame.
