Is there any way to get a queen-size box spring upstairs? A: We make a two-piece queen-size (and full-size) box spring for narrow staircases. We also make a hinged mattress which folds for tight areas. Please let us know if you need a hinged mattress prior to your order as this is not something that we do to every mattress. Q: Today’s mattresses are so high is there anyway to make my set lower? A: We can do several things to make your overall set lower. The first thing we can do is make a low-profile box spring. A standard box-spring is between 7 1/2” to 9″ high while a low-profile model is approximately 5 ½”. Or we can use a bunkie board which measures 2”. Q: I thought the firmest mattress would be the most expensive. A: Actually, the softer models usually cost more than firm models of the same quality.
The answer lies in the amount of material used in the production of each. A firm mattress does not call for a lot of padding on top of the supportive innerspring, but more padding is required to create the plusher feel you get with a softer mattress. You can see the difference in the thickness of each. Q: Can I use my old box spring? A: If the box spring is in good condition, it may not need changing. However, a box spring over ten years old should be replaced. The most important thing to stress is that an old worn out box spring will cause a new mattress to wear out much faster than normal. Q: What is the difference between a prorated and a non-prorated warranty? A: Most major brands today have a prorated mattress warranty. Basically, the value of a prorated warranty decreases over time. For example, should you have a problem in the seventh year of a ten-year prorated warranty, only 30% of the repair would be covered. A non-prorated warranty, like we have at Portland Mattress Makers, covers the entire mattress for the length of the warranty.
Q: What is coil count, and how does it affect the quality of a mattress? A: Coil count refers to the number of coils in a mattress innerspring and should always be based on a full-sized mattress. While the number of coils is very important to the quality and support of a mattress, equally important is the thickness of the wire (gauge) used in the innerspring and also the number of turns in each coil. Q: What does the box spring do? A: Box springs perform 3 major functions.
