There are many styles of Murphy beds and fold-out couches on the market, but they can be costly and some are just too large. Knowing how to build a folding bed can be a great way to create the extra sleeping space you need. Before you begin building the folding bed, determine what size of bed you have space for and shop for a lightweight mattress that will be a good fit. If you cannot find one that fits your available space, you can buy high density foam and cut it to fit. Simply use flat sheets when you make up the bed if the mattress is an odd size. Be sure to add an extra two inches all around for the bed to fit. The width of the top and bottom boards will be the desired size of your bed plus four inches. Attach the sides to the bottom board using glue and screws, pre-drilling the holes so the wood does not crack. Cut and attach two pieces of 1" x 4" across the back of the box, even with the bottom piece and the top piece, and level with the top of the side boards. Measure and cut a 1" x 2" piece to attach to the top front of the box. Make sure the top section is square and attach the large top piece. Make a similar box for the mattress using 1" x 8" for the head of the frame and sides.
The difference will be shorter in width by two inches to fit into the wall box. Cut the side pieces so they only reach halfway down the size of your mattress length. Taper them if desired. Lay your plywood on a flat surface and use your molding or 1" x 2" lengths to create an attractive armoire-look. This will become the underside of the bed, but the area that will face your room when the bed is folded up. Attach the mattress frame to the plywood using glue and nails. Again, pre-drilling will prevent cracks and breakage. Mount the box to your wall, ensuring everything is square and level. Pull the mattress section even with the bottom of the wall box. Ensuring the head of the mattress box is level and square with the bottom of your wall box, screw the hinges on to attach the two frames. Fold up the bottom section to ensure the fit is proper. Make any adjustments as needed. Put the mattress in place and fold up the bed again. Mark where the magnetic closures will go, then pre-drill and mount.
Remove the mattress and sand the whole bed to ensure it has a smooth finish. Paint or varnish with the color of your choice and allow it to dry thoroughly. Replace the mattress and use or fold and store for when needed. Building your own folding bed can be a fun project. If you are advanced in your building skills, it would be easy to turn the false armoire front into a collapsible desk so the unit truly serves a dual purpose. You could cut plywood in the desired width of the desk, create a folding support and attach the back of the desk to a piano hinge so the whole works folds flat when the bed is in use.
