A Bangor mum has called for a model of glass table to be recalled by Asda after hers spontaneously shattered minutes after her son had been playing nearby. The young mother, who does not wish to be named, bought the item as part of the Miami patio set from the firm’s supermarket in Bangor, Gwynedd on May 9 for £80. Less than 10 days later however, she said that the table suddenly exploded. She claims the product’s glass top was undamaged and unmarked when it shattered. “I absolutely think they should take them off the shelves,” she added. “I had just put my two-year-old son to bed, he had been playing outside and then when I came downstairs it had smashed. “It was immaculate, there was no a mark on it, it was not in the sunshine either. On their website they have written: “We’ve received a small number of complaints from customers that the glass in patio tables bought from Asda has shattered. “
The toughened glass in the table, if damaged, is designed to shatter into lots of tiny pieces like a car windscreen as a safety feature and is not a fault of the product. “In some instances damage to the table, such as bad scratches, can get slowly worse with time which is why some tables may shatter unexpectedly.” Fears Asda and Aldi rum could contain glass leads to North Wales recall But the Bangor mum said the guidance is not enough. She said: “I saw it and I liked it so I bought it, I wouldn’t have if I knew it was at a risk of exploding like that. “I did not think to read up on it, you see a really nice table and you buy it.” In July last year Asda pledged to investigate after a patio table exploded after being in the sun for four hours.
