Yes, a percentage of the mattress’ foam (about 22%) is made from soybeans, which replaces some of the typical petrochemical foams found in other inexpensive mattresses. As you can see below, the green foam soybean core is surrounded by two layers of padding and covered in a vinyl laminate. The cover is made with a vinyl laminate that is phthalate-free and it doesn’t use any toxic fire retardants. The Sealy Soybean Foam-Core is GreenGuard certified and made in America. The mattress also has square corners (see below) for better fit. At just 8.3 pounds, this lightweight but firm mattress makes changing sheets easy. Some parents have lamented the fact that the entire mattress is not made of soybean foam, but we think it does offer a middle ground for parents who can’t afford a $300 crib mattress for their child.
It does reduce the amount of petrochemicals used in production. Other parents noted the mattress seemed too hard—but it is designed to be firm.
