Facebook’s News Feed algorithm is constantly evolving and now the social network has started experimenting with a rocket ship icon to serve up fresh content they think users will be interested in.

The rocket ship is actually a second News Feed being tested on Facebook, featuring suggested content based on your current likes and interests, as well as posts popular with your friends, TechCrunch reports.

It has been tentatively rolled out on the Facebook mobile app to iOS and Android users, however it has left many people it is being tested on confused about what the icon actually means.

One user tweeted: “@facebook what is the new rocket ship icon in the bottom tray?!?”

“What the heck is the rocket icon in Facebook for?” wrote another.

Scot Thomas posted: “I'm normally not tech stupid- but I have no idea what the "rocket" icon means at the bottom of Facebook on my phone.”

Facebook said it was trialling the second News Feed option in response to user demand for more ways to discover new content.

“We are testing a complementary feed of popular articles, videos, and photos, customised for each person based on the content that might be interesting to them,” a spokesperson said.

“We’ve heard from people that they want an easy way to explore new content they haven’t connected with yet.”
