Maybe it'll soften up after I wash it and rinse with fabric softener. I guess it'll do the job of protecting the mattress.

There was no struggle at all. It is thin enough as not to take away from the feel of the mattress, but still provides protection. It did come in a small package that smelled funny even after washing, but the information included did ssay it would smell when opened and to wash it. One more washing did the trick.
