Windsor is made from either elm or ash, from naturally regenerative forests. Synonymous with natural wood pieces, the family owned business has been producing carefully crafted furniture that is made to last for nearly 100 years.
It was founded by a young Italian called Lucian Ercolani who moved to London in 1898 with his parents. After struggling to learn English at school he left to become a messenger boy. While on his errands he spotted a poster for a furniture design course at the Shoreditch Technical Institute. His father Abdon, who had made picture frames in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery and was working with the Salvation Army as a carpenter, encouraged Ercolani to learn a craft. He took drawing and design classes at the Institute and then entered the City & Guilds exams in theory and construction of furniture. Ercolani’s three brothers also worked in the industry and he began his career with them. However, in 1920 he set up his own factory and the ercol that we know today was born. His goal was to make furniture that was well designed in a good working environment by craftsmen who took pride in their jobs. The ethos still rings true. In 1932 Ercolani was offered the chance to take over Walter Skulls Limited, a firm of quality chairmakers that had been struggling to keep afloat financially.
To this day ercol’s chair department is referred to as Skulls. During the Second World War, the company worked for the government, making 25,000 tent pegs a day as well as other supplies. In the post-war years of the 1940s and 50s the Utility Scheme fostered wide-scale demand for plain furniture which could be swiftly produced at affordable prices. Ercolani sped up the production process by inventing a system for steaming timber, bending the moist wood in clamps and then allowing the bent wood to dry in a regulated kiln until it was stable. This allowed for mass production – up to 2000 chairs a week were produced – and the famous Windsor Kitchen Chair was purchased by millions of households, signalling the beginning of ercol’s boom years. The cool, pared back look appealed to home owners of the 1960s who were keen to embrace the ‘Scandinavian’ style of living. The ercol bed, which doubled as a sofa, seemed revolutionary. Another development in design and manufacturing quickly followed, the preformed chair.
Known as the Butterfly Chair, it connected a plywood seat and seatback upon the turned legs. Then came sideboards, cabinets, room dividers and wardrobes. The Stacking Chair, Loveseat, Plank table and nest of pebble tables were swiftly classics. Today, the company continues to manufacture its bestsellers at its factory in Princes Risborough where planks of wood enter the building to be sawn, turned, heated, bent, cooled, honed, burnished, painted and polished before emerging as desirable pieces. Most ideas are conceived in the ercol design studio with Ercolani’s grandson Edward Tadros at the helm. As well as maintaining the Originals Range, the in-house team invites leading design names to offer their own interpretation of the ercol brand. Matthew Hilton, Russell Pinch and Tomoko Azumi are amongst those who have reinterpreted classics to ensure that contemporary tastes are reflected. This blend of traditional values and modern interpretations should stand ercol in good stead for decades to come.
