Made using traditional craft techniques and modern machining these cabinets have the beauty of displayed dovetail joints and iconic oval wooden handles. Lucian Ercolani, the founder of Ercol in 1920, set out to develop and enhance the range of Windsor chairs that he designed in the 1950s into a complete and coherent range of furniture for the home.

He took the very simple aesthetic and the use of solid timbers into dining tables and chairs and a huge range of cabinets.  The “Old Man” as he was fondly known in the company was inspired to make this range accessible to all, functional and unpretentious.  The design with its clean and modern lines, marked a significant change from the heavy, dark and ornate furniture of earlier periods. Tremendous craftsmanship is apparent throughout this simple, yet wonderfully elegant furniture. Our craftsmen work in our 160,000 square feet factory purpose built by us in Princes Risborough in 2002.  The furniture is created by the marriage of inspired design work, the hand skills of the craftsman and the latest technology of computer driven machines. Over the years, the Windsor range has developed and been through many evolutions in order to keep up with what people need in their home. The timeless design looks as contemporary now as it did when it was first produced, suiting both modern and traditional interiors.

Born in Italy in 1888, Lucian's family moved to London in the 1890s. There he went to night school at the Shoreditch Technical Institute where he studied drawing, design and the theory and construction of furniture. In 1907 he made his first piece of furniture - a musical cabinet, inlaid with mother of pearl. Years later the company tracked this down and we still have it to this day. The Old Man designed the company's products for many years. The Windsor range remains one of our most popular ranges over half a century after it was first launched in its original guise, whilst a few years ago we reintroduced some of Lucian's classic designs, which now form the ercol Originals.
