But when Shavonda Gardner of SG Style had security and aesthetics in mind when she replaced her entry door locks and handles. Here, she shows us how she installed two locksets– one with an electronic keypad and alarm, and a traditional keyed lock. Last summer my family and I downsized into a small 1940s cottage bungalow fixer upper, and we’ve been slowly making it home one project at a time. One of my favorite things about our house is its charm and character, which is evident from the moment you pull into the driveway. Unfortunately, the house came with unsightly security doors that knocked down the charm factor in a major way. I hated them, and for almost a year rather than them making me feel secure, they made feel a bit imprisoned. I’ve been planning their demise from the moment we moved in, so when The Home Depot asked if Id like to try out some Schlage exterior door locks, it was the PERFECT opportunity to finally get rid of them. As a bonus we were also given the opportunity to upgrade our front door.

The door that came with the house wasn’t very energy efficient, and I had also been wanting something that would bring in some natural light into our home. After browsing the options online I chose a craftsman-style door. For the hardware I chose this Schlage Touchscreen Handleset with Alarm. At the same time I also selected a Schlage keyed entry with deadbolt for our porch entry door. Receiving our new hardware felt like Christmas in July! I couldn’t wait to get them installed! The Home Depot install team arrived with the new door and got to work exchanging it right away. Within a few hours they had the old door out and the new one installed. I even stepped in to help! The door came pre-drilled for hardware and as part of the installation services the hardware was put on by the install team. Since the door was pre-primed, I was required to wait 48 hours before painting and finishing touches. After giving the door a few coats of Glidden’s Orange Tiger Lily it was time to reinstall the hardware.

Since I wasn’t there when the hardware was originally put on, I was sure to pay attention to the way it was removed to paint, and referred to the easy-to-follow directions that came with the locks. Because the door was already pre-drilled, installation was really quick and easy. I started by installing the handleset. After installing the faceplates for both the handle and deadbolt, I simply placed the handle through the pre-drilled hole and attached the interior knob on the opposite side. Next up I installed the electronic deadbolt. Again I placed the keypad through the pre-drilled hole and screwed in the faceplate on the interior side ensuring the wire was pulled through as well. Then I inserted the wire into the alarm/hand knob set, attached it to the door, and installed the AA batteries. Finally, using the user guide, I activated the electronic keypad, programmed it with our personal pin numbers, and activated the alarm. The Schlage keyless entry was easy to install, looks amazing with the new door, and having an alarm integrated in the keypad offers an extra layer of security for our family’s safety and peace of mind.

I also really love that there is an option to use a key if we want. I absolutely LOVE our new front door. It is the perfect addition to our little cottage and looks as though it’s always been here. I love that you can actually see our door from the street and its not hiding behind a dark screen. Our entry feels much more welcoming now. In addition to installing a new door and locks at the front entry, I also installed a new lockset on our porch entrance. I chose Schlage’s Camelot Georgian Entry Set in Antique Bronze. We had security doors in place there, as well. I removed them and wanted to add a bit of extra security by adding a deadbolt to the existing door. Unlike the front door, this one didn’t come with a deadbolt  hole preexisting, so I had to create one. Replacing the old hand knob, seen above, was simple and as easy as taking off the old one and screwing on the new one. The  instructions that came with the set made installation easy and perfect for the DIYer .

I starting by using the template to determine the placement of the deadbolt and strike. I borrowed my neighbor and his drill bit to help create the hole for the lock and strike. We started by using a drill to create the hole for the deadbolt and installing the faceplate and latch. I then installed the lock and ensured it was functioning properly. We then moved on to installing the strike in the door jamb using a hand chisel and drilling with a spade bit. This step required a bit of finesse. We didn’t want to chisel too deep or too hard. The spade bit is used to create the slot the deadbolt turns in to. But once the slot was made, it was easy to bolt the strike plate to the door. Above, you see the porch door with the old lockset. And there you have it! Above is the door with the new lockset. It looks much better. The entire process took about 20 minutes with the most time-consuming part being the drilling of the hole for the deadbolt, and carefully chiseling out the space for the strike.
