Engineering

Good morning everybody! Today I would like to talk about engineering. We all receive a classical engineering education, taking over the tradition. Somehow, some of us will devote our lives to engineering. Let’s talk about what it is and what role it plays in our lives.

To begin with, I would like to give a definition. Engineering is an area of activity aimed at the practical application of scientific, economic, social and practical knowledge (according to Wikipedia). To date, engineering is divided into many branches, such as Electrical Engineering (deals with energy generation and distribution), Electronic Engineering (deals with the development of logical electronic devices), Mechanical Engineering (development of mechanisms), Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering (has dealing with construction, transportation and other civil issues). And these are only the main directions.

Engineers in all of these areas are trained in higher mathematics, physics, applied mechanics, and various specialized disciplines. All this is necessary in order to have sufficient tools to solve various problems.

In general, all the work of an engineer is based on inventing solutions. This requires an analytical mindset and a creative touch. Of course, part of their work consists in introducing ready-made solutions where necessary, however, another part consists in inventing something that has never been created, or is too hard to find. Models, simulations, prototypes, destructive tests - all these are the results of the intellectual labor of engineers.

From what has been said above, it becomes clear that society needs a huge number of engineers of varying degrees of qualification. So what are the degrees in engineering? In different countries in different ways.

For example in the UK, there are degrees MEng and BEng. The MEng degree is a year longer than the BEng and gives you the benefit of advanced skills and knowledge, which is always appealing to employers. The MEng and BEng courses are the same for the first two years, but different topics are covered from year three onwards. Chartered Engineer (CEng) status - the majority of our UK students undertake a MEng, BEng course In the USA, the system passes to the Russian one. The bachelor's degree is the standard four year undergraduate degree. For graduate students, there are two year master's degree.

Everyone has their own reason to get an engineering degree. For example, I do not plan to connect my life with the electric power industry, although I regard this as a fallback. It seems to me that such an education is very balanced and makes it possible to learn to see the processes taking place as a system in which everything is connected. Firstly, it is useful at any job or when creating your own business. Secondly, it gives greater freedom of thinking. The expansion of consciousness makes me happy.

In the end, I want to note that I consider the Institute of Engineering fundamental to maintain modern production and economic processes. This industry is growing every year and we see an increasing need of society for us, which cannot but rejoice.
