An electric blanket is a great way to keep yourself warm in bed when the world outside is freezing over. And even if it’s not the depths of winter, it’s a cozy way to keep your body at the exact temperature you need to sleep well. In this review I’ll be looking at electric blankets made by the 3 main manufacturers of heated bedding. I’ll be focusing on on how comfortable they are to use, if they have a wide range of heat settings, how good the cord placement is, and importantly if they have dual controls for you and your partner. 1) Soft Heat Ultra Micro-Plush Electric Blanket Most comfortable electric blanket The Soft Heat electric blanket neatly combines comfort with a robust and reliable design. It has all the features you would hope for in a high quality electric blanket: dual controls with the queen and king sizes; It will keep you warm and snug on those cold nights with a range of heat settings, and you and your partner have full control of your separate sides.

It’s made from a soft, plush material and is surprisingly light-weight. It heats well, has multiple temperature settings, and a soft-heat setting if you just want a little warmth. The wires are thin and well encased so you won’t feel them. The cords come out of the foot of the bed and are long enough to reach under the bed and plug in back at the wall. If you share your bed and have queen or king size, you’ll get separate controls for the two separate heating areas. The controller is easy to use, with a back-lit display so you can see what setting it’s on in the night. Small transformers convert the mains power into safer lower voltage current. Comes with a 5 year warranty. With the queen and king sizes you need two sockets to plug the transformers in. The Soft Heat is my recommended electric blanket if you’re looking for a combination of comfort, ease of use, safety and dual controls. It’s up to the job of keeping you warm, and importantly allows two people to sleep with the level of heat they each prefer.

2) Sunbeam Microplush Heated Blanket Light-weight and attractive design The Sunbeam microplush heated blanket is well-designed, comfortable on the skin and will keep you snug and warm. It has an attractive design which won’t look out of place in the modern bedroom. It shares many features in common with the Soft Heat, but there are some important differences. And as is often the case with heated bedding, you’ll see that the main differences are practical issues around the wires and connectors. The microplush material is soft and looks attractive. It’s thin and light-weight, which reduces over-heating and won’t weigh down on you in bed. The queen and king size have dual controllers (the easy turn-dial type) with separate heating compartments for couples. There are 10 heat settings and it heats well throughout the blanket. It comes with normal plugs rather than transformers. The cords come out of the foot end of the blanket and are a good length.

It comes with a 5 year warranty. No specific pre-heat setting. 4 cords to deal with on larger sizes – two connectors and two controllers. The Sunbeam heated blanket is pleasantly soft and heats well, with multiple settings and dual controls. It has normal plugs rather than transformers, so in many ways the light-weight design works for the better. 3) Biddeford Comfort Knit Heated Blanket Analog controllers and easy-fit The Biddeford heated blanket is a good alternative for those who find digital controllers difficult to use at night. It lacks some of the bells and whistles of the previous blankets, but it makes up for that in basic, reliable functionality. It’s also one of the few of any kind of heated bedding – mattress pad, throw or blanket – to use a simple analog control design. It has 10 heat settings and heats well throughout. Queen and King size blankets have dual controls, so you and your partner will have individual heat sections.

The controller is an easy-to-use analog style. The material is good quality 100% polyester and is soft and comfortable. But it’s not micro plush like the previous two brands for those who find that a little too hot. Auto-off function after 10 hours. The cords come out of the foot end and are long enough to reach the wall. The contrast is low between the white base and yellow numbers on the controller. So if you have poor eyesight, you may struggle to see what setting it’s on in dim light. You have multiple cords to deal with – two for the connectors and two for the controllers. The Biddeford heated blanket is a good option if you want a simple electric blanket with dual controls that are easy to use. Machine washable, easy to transport and with reliable heating settings, it’s a robust and comfortable choice of heated blanket.Caution: Do not use commercial dryers or the dryers at your local Laundromat as they get too hot and can damage the wiring of your heated product.

Have you ever enjoyed standing in front of a sunny window in winter soaking up the sun’s warmth while the temperatures outside were freezing? Radiant heating, in this case from the sun, is so comfortable because it heats objects, including your body, and not the air.
