No one's asked a question yet—why not get the conversation going?A mattress can be one of the most costly components in the bedroom, so once you've found the mattress of your dreams, you'll want to protect your investment. Mattress protectors/pads and encasements prolong the life of your mattress while protecting the mattress from dust, dirt, stains and more.  Mattress covers and box spring covers can be flame resistant, hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, allergen resistant to deter dust mites, pet dander and the like, even impermeable to help stop the penetration of bed bugs through fabric. Much like mattresses, mattress protectors are available in sizes ranging from twin and twin-XL to full, queen, king and California king as well as sized for a crib mattresses. A waterproof mattress protector for the crib is a practical investment that will pay for itself. Most mattress protectors are machine washable so you can keep them clean and fresh. For those heading off to college, a mattress protector is an important part of any bedding ensemble but more so when the mattress is previously owned.

So, what's the difference between a mattress encasement and a mattress pad/protector? Generally, an encasement fully encloses either the mattress or box spring. A cover typically covers three sides only, similar to the way a mattress pad or topper fits. A mattress pad is placed above the actual mattress, and is used to protect the mattress from staining and wear, and to help keep sheets on the bed. Some are hypoallergenic, and the thick ones provide extra comfort and support. Many types of mattress pads and encasements are available. Mattress Encasements for Allergy Protection For chronic allergy sufferers, there is no better solution than a full mattress encasement and box spring encasement. There are many options that offer protection from allergens such as dust, dust mites, dead skin, pet dander and pollen. A typical mattress cover cannot prevent allergens from your mattress from coming in contact with you. Mattress Encasements for Bed Bug Protection People all over the world are concerned over the growing outbreak of bedbugs.

While a mattress encasement will not protect your home from a bedbug infestation, it will effectively lock bedbugs out of your sleep system. Only total encasement mattress protectors with a locking zipper provide protection against bedbugs. Fitted: A fitted pad is like a thick, fitted sheet, with a bit of quilting on the top and fitted, elastic sides to make sure that the pad does not move around. Anchor: Anchor pads are a cheaper version, covering the top of the mattress and anchored by elastic bands in the corners. Guaranteed-to-Fit: A guaranteed-to-fit mattress pad is also similar to the anchor pad, except the sidewalls expand to accommodate variations in mattress size. Memory Foam: One type of mattress pad that provides extra cushioning is the memory foam pad; this looks like a thin mattress. Egg Crate: A foam egg-crate style of mattress pad is a less expensive option for more cushioning. Down: Extra softness can be achieved with a down or feather type of mattress pad.

Materials: Mattress pads are available in many types of material, such as cotton, wool, polyester, organic fabric, silk, foam, down, feathers and synthetic down. I saw on another part of mdjunction where some people said they were using the heated mattress pads from walmart. They fit on the bed like a sheet, but are heated. I was concerned about the wires in them...if there are wires...hurting underneath me, but I read the reviews on walmart and saw that someone said the quilted kind of heated mattress pad doesn't feel like that (there were 2 on the website) both made by sunbeam. I have an electric blanket on my bed and an electric throw by the computer that John got me for Christmas...heat always makes my body feel better...so does anyone use one? I never heard of the heated matress pad and I would have the same questions you have. I do use an electric blanket. I have a love/hate relationship with my electric blanket, haha, I love it when I am cold and it feels so good to climb into that warm bed... awwwww BUT when I wake up in the middle of the night having a hot flash I swing that blanket off me so fast!

I hate the thing then!!! I am having bad hot flashes again, no clue why!If you or anyone finds out more about them , please share. I am curious too. Well, my mom bought the heated mattress pad for me for an early birthday present (birthday isn't until April). If I had it shipped to my house, it would have been 12 extra dollars, so I did site to store shipping and that made the shipping free. I had to list 2 pick up people on the order and when it is picked up, I have to bring the printout with the order number, etc. and bring an ID. I ordered it on Feb. 3rd and it arrived in store on Feb. 11th. They were supposed to email me, but I never got any email. and it said it arrived at the store on Feb. 11th. I was worried that they would give me trouble since I didn't have the email to print out, but I printed the details from my account and John took the form this morning along with his ID and picked it up. I am going to send a customer complaint to walmart and tell them that I never received an email that my order was ready.

With tax, the queen sized one was $130. The queen and king size have dual controls which helps if you have a spouse who burns up like John does, while I freeze! We keep our room cold in the summer with our window a/c, so I think this will even be helpful for my pain during the hot months. I know that the warmth helps me as warm baths help and I have an electric blanket on my bed which helps and an electric blanket at my computer which I have on me when I am sitting here. I also turn on the seat warmers in the car and it helps my back while I am driving. So...after reading the reviews, I bought the Sunbeam quilted one because the reviews said that you couldn't feel the wires on this one as opposed to another cheaper Sunbeam one at Walmart. and type in "mattress pad" on the search area and then look through until you find the Sunbeam Quilted heated mattress pad or something like that. You can check on there to see if it is in stock at a walmart store near you instead of having to order it.

I will be putting it on my bed today, so I will let you know tomorrow how it works out and if it is worth it! I think if I used anything electric on my bed that I would short it. I sweat so much when I sleep that I would be afraid of electricuting myself. We haven't turned it on yet, but I am so excited about it that I am ready to go to bed already! I do have to say that it did fit on my bed very nicely. I was worried because I have an egg crate mattress and a memory foam topper on top of my mattress. But, I had no trouble getting it to fit. I also cannot feel the wires through the quilting...so far, so good. I had an ok body day, but my lumps on the back of my ribs...especially on my left side are super swollen today...not sure why except that I did clean out the bedroom today...the drawers, dusted, vacuumed, etc. and then I cooked a candlelit dinner and made John a heart shaped cake. We broke out the china we got for our wedding and turned off the TV and the lights. It was very nice.
