Das Vitra Design Museum beschrieb den Designer-Stuhl in seiner Broschüre als ein Werk zwischen Möbeldesign und Architektur, eine Auffassung, die sich auch in Eero Aarnios Ausspruch der Stuhl sei ein „Raum im Raum“ widerspiegelt. Seit dieser Zeit hat das Design des Ball Chair nichts von seiner Aktualität verloren, im Gegenteil, es hat viele nachfolgende Generationen von Möbeln beeinflusst, inspiriert und mitgestaltet.
Das Geheimnis seines Erfolgs ist die Einfachheit der geometrischen Form, der Kugel. Sie steht in der Natur für Stabilität und Ausgeglichenheit, Perfektion und Schönheit, aber auch für Kraft, Energie sowie unendliche Komplexität in der Mathematik. In der Philosopie repräsentiert sie schließllich auch das menschliche Streben nach Erkenntnis und Vollendung. Es heißt, dass der italienische Maler Giotto einen perfekten Kreis aus freier Hand zeichnen konnte, er hätte sicher seine Freude daran gehabt, Eero Aarnio beim Entwurf seines Meisterstückes zu beobachten. Um die Maße des Stuhls zu testen, malte er einen Kreis in der späteren Originalgröße des Sessels und probierte daran die Bewegungen aus, die ihn dann zur richtigen Größe der Kugel führten. Man sollte bequem hinein und heraus kommen, der fertige Ball Chair sollte jedoch auch noch durch eine Tür passen - eine Balance, die durch ständiges Probieren erreicht wurde. Vielleicht hätte nicht nur Giotto seinen Spaß daran gehabt den Designer bei der Arbeit zu sehen…
