As a result, the tube looks like solid metal.On less expensive copies, the holes are plugged with plastic-and-metal caps. They`re rarely flush and occasionally fall out. Many stores keep a box of spare plugs for this reason.On the ubiquitous round side-table designed by Eileen Gray, check the little chain that hangs from the post. The authorized copy by Stendig is beaded, not linked; almost every knockoff uses links. Gray meant this to be a fine detail, but some chains look conspicuously cheap.- Compare the metal.
Many modern classics are made of chrome-plated steel, but you can`t see how thick the plating is. ``The more chrome, the more shine, the more durability,`` says Sergio Palazzetti, owner of the company that bears his name. On knockoffs, check the floor models for flaking or pitted chrome.Inspect the weldings wherever two pieces of metal tubing meet. If you see or feel a lumpy hill of metal around the joint, the manufacturer didn`t take pains. Excess welding must be ground off by hand; if it`s carefully done, you`ll probably pay more for the labor.Copies of the Eames Lounge Chair abound. Herman Miller`s authorized copy has a solid aluminum base; on some knockoffs the base is hollow (seams on the metal are the giveaway) and has four supports instead of the prescribed five. - Can parts be replaced? If a spring pops out of a chaise or a cap drops out of a steel tube, can the store replace it promptly?- Compare the leather.Even without expertise you can tell the best leather by its softness, and spot-check for other details.
Are leather seats lined underneath with paper or vinyl? (Vinyl, at least, is more resilient.) Have strips of stiff leather been sandwiched around cardboard? Look at the stitching on the front and back of the chair. Do you wish it was neater?Check for vinyl details, such as straps and welding.Going from mediocre leather to excellent leather can double the price of a chair, so manufacturers of some knockoffs may economize here.- Compare the wood. The much-copied Eames Lounge Chair has a molded rosewood shell, and the grain on the ottoman precisely matches the grain on the chair. Many copies are made of molded walnut or another wood, have unmatched grains and use a thinner shell.Charles Rennie Mackintosh furniture is usually made of ebonized ash, as the designer intended. (Atelier International, or AI, sells the authorized copies that are made by Cassina in Italy.) Manufacturers may take hidden economies in the way they join the dozens of tiny slats together, but visually, it`s impossible to tell most knockoffs from the Cassina copies.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed his furniture in oak. Curiously, though unauthorized copies by Heinz & Co. in Grand Rapids, Mich., are made of oak, the authorized pieces by Cassina are made of American cherry. Both companies offer certain finishes that Wright did not use. (Authorized Wright accessories are faithful but not purist: One patterned fabric by Schumacher, for example, is adapted from a 1923 concrete-block design by the architect.)Thomas Heinz, head of Heinz & Co., says he works from the 50,000 photos he has amassed of Wright`s designs, but only Cassina and the other licensees have access to Wright`s original plans and drawings.
