‘’The most sporting cars of 2014‘’: Five BMW models top their category in reader vote.Read all BMW reviewsSearch all our cars for sale in SAMake:Model:Share this page BMW South Africa refurbishes 2 of its classic cars – the legendary BMW M1 and BMW 333i BMW M1 and BMW 333i refurbishedBMW Group is having its centenary celebrations this year under the motto “THE NEXT 100 YEARS”.As part of this milestone, BMW South Africa has refurbished 2 of its classic cars: the legendary BMW M1 supercar, and the South African exclusive BMW 333i.As a world-renowned manufacturer of premium automobiles and motorcycles, the BMW company values the preservation of its heritage.  It is for this reason that BMW South Africa purchased the BMW M1 from a customer in the mid 1980s and used the vehicle as part of its classic collection, as well as various activities. The M1 was later joined by the E23 BMW 745i, E28 BMW M5, E30 BMW 333i and BMW 325is.BMW 745i, 333i and 325is unique to SAThe first BMW 745i was also unique to South Africa, as the SA-developed 745i used the M Power 3.5-litre multi-valve straight-6 engine, where the 745i in other markets had a turbo engine installed.

The 325is was also a car unique to South Africa.  When the original M3 (E30) was launched overseas, it was not destined for SA… but BMW SA made their own plan:  the 325i 2-door was used as base car, but a larger 2.7-litre engine was engineered for use in the 325is.  It also received the M Technik aerodynamic body kit including big rear spoiler, and sporty items like bucket sports seats and an exhaust to better hear that BMW singing smooth straight-6.  It had cross-spoke 15” wheels, the full electric package, a 25% limited-slip differential and M Sport suspension with Bilstein struts.  The car has a rich racing history, winning local races such as the Stannic Group N Class and Castrol Nine Hour races, amongst others. However, in the late 1990s the 745i and M5 were sold to customers.  Only the BMW M1, BMW 333i and the BMW 325is remained in the BMW SA collection. After acquiring the BMW M1, BMW South Africa changed the car from its original navy blue paint to this red colour.  This detracts from the value of the car, as in classic car circles the original is always the best for authenticity and value.

The seats, steering wheel, dashboard and carpets were completely redone at the then seat and upholstery supplier in Rosslyn, using original BMW materials.  After some years, the car was no longer driveable, as parts became scarce. The car was then only used for static purposes until July this year, when a decision was taken to refurbish the car and get it mobile again.  The refurbishment was completed by the company’s press vehicle technicians as well as two apprentices from the BMW Training Centre at Plant Rosslyn. The birth of a legend in 1978: the BMW M1When the 64th Paris Motor Show opened its gates in 1978, sports car fans and lovers had only one destination – the stand of BMW Motorsport GmbH.  There they were able to admire a super-low, extremely dynamic new model making it quite clear at very first sight that this was Germany's fastest road-going sports car: the BMW M1.It was 1140 millimetres (44.9 inches) high (low) with a power of 204 kW at 6500 r/min and a top speed of 262 km/h.

This was the late Seventies, remember – this was supercar stuff.  "Everybody was crowding around BMW's new mid-engined sports car", wrote the press at the time.In addition to a successful racing history, the BMW M1 is significant as the first of the sports cars developed independently by BMW Motorsport GmbH.  In July 2016, BMW Group Classic staged a revival with BMW M1 racing cars in the Procar Series just before the race for the “Austrian Grand Prix” at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.  Races with these cars were enthusiastically received in the supporting programme on Formula 1 weekends in Europe.  When the first Procar Race was held at Zolder, Belgium, in May 1979, contemporary Formula 1 racing drivers competed in identical racing versions of the BMW M1 against national sports-car professionals, private drivers and talented upcoming drivers.  Some of these drivers are now taking the opportunity to get back into the cockpit of the BMW M1 at events such as the Legends Parade in Spielberg, including the 3-time Formula 1 World Champion Niki Lauda, who won three Procar Races in 1979 and also succeeded in claiming the overall placing.

A South African exclusive: the BMW 333iAnother special car that was refurbished is the locally exclusive BMW 333i.  This is the E30 generation (or 2nd generation BMW 3 Series) which was the 1st locally-available 3 Series, and a car that did wonders for the BMW brand in South Africa, winning it many fans. The BMW 333i was manufactured from 1985 to 1987 at BMW Plant Rosslyn and characterised by a special engine as well as numerous other technological and design features.  The BMW 333i was specially developed for the South African market and created in collaboration with BMW, BMW Motorsport GmbH and Alpina (hence the distinctive Alpina design alloy wheels).  The highlights of the BMW 333i include a 3.2-litre straight six-cylinder engine with 146 kW, which BMW borrowed from the… Yes, the 733i engine was found the be suitable for squeezing into the E30 engine bay, and the 333i was born. It used a 5-speed sports transmission and sports suspension, with specific cockpit details like the red needles (which was reserved for M cars) and the BMW Motorsport 3-colour flash insert on the steering-wheel spoke.
