River rocks are rounded and smooth, making them an ideal material for a front doormat. Although it may be difficult to find a real river rock doormat in stores, you can make your own using smooth rocks that you collect while on a hike. When you finish, you will have an eye-catching, durable mat that will help you keep dirt and mud out of your house. Select a rectangular rubber doormat, and place it on a flat work surface. Insert a hot glue stick into the back of your hot glue gun. Plug the gun into an electrical outlet, and allow it to heat up for five minutes. While the glue gun is heating, lay your river rocks out in the desired pattern next to your mat. Squeeze a quarter-sized dollop of hot glue onto the rubber mat. Place the hot glue dollop near the upper-right hand corner. Press your river rock onto the hot glue dollop, and hold it in place for two minutes so that the hot glue can cool and harden. Squeeze another quarter-sized dollop of hot glue right next to the first, and press another river rock onto the glue, as before.

Hold the rock in place for two minutes. Repeat this process until the entire surface of the rubber doormat is covered in rocks. Make sure you arrange the river rocks so that they are right next to each other. This will make the mat more durable and aesthetically pleasing.
