While you’re there, be sure to beat the heat at the Captain Lawrence Beer Garden.  We’ll skip all the hot-air puns and just tell it to you straight: Go see the mass launch of the Dutchess County Annual Balloon Festival (top of page) today. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the three-day festival will have skies throughout the Hudson Valley teeming with brightly colored hot-air balloons. Dutchess County Annual Balloon Festival, various locations

Maybe you can’t buy your kids a pony, but you can certainly introduce them to horseback riding. Sign them up for a lesson at Twin Lakes Farm in Bronxville or Chicory Meadow Farmin Cortlandt Manor, which also offers lessons for children with special needs; add jumping to the mix with the instructors at JT Farm in South Salem; or take the reins yourself in Mamaroneck at Boulder Brook Equestrian’s “Ride and Cheese” class—an adults-only program that includes wine and cheese (after you dismount, of course).Embrace your inner Francophile with a tour of our favorite Larchmont spots. Grab a simple crêpe from Estelle Gourmet before shopping for oozy French cheeses at Auray Gourmet. And of course, you need pastries—pick up a flaky croissant or tart at La Parisienne. Prefer to celebrate with wine? Wine Geeks in Armonk is offering a guided tour of the wines of France complete with charcuterie and cheeses. Six men in full Amish garb playing tunes from a disparate variety of artists including Johnny Cash, Jay Z, Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, and Elvis Presley.

Head to the Cross County Shopping Center to see the Amish Outlaws do their “straight outta Lancaster” thing as part of the Center’s SummerFest 2015 outdoor concert series. Cross County Shopping Center, Yonkers Break a sweat, get to know your co-workers outside the office—and raise money for the Blythedale Children’s Hospital—at the Corporate Fun Run. Stick around after the 5K to celebrate your fitness and philanthropy with beer and barbeque. The Performing Arts Center at SUNY Purchase, Purchase Get a jump on your fall wardrobe update at the legendary Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which starts today and runs until August 2. You may have to fight the crowds, but expect to snag new, deeply discounted fall merchandise.  KIDZ BOP is making a tour stop today at Bethel Woods. The “No. 1 Kids’ Artists” according to Billboard Magazine, perform family-friendly covers of hits by today’s most popular artists including Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea, and Pharrell Williams.

Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, Bethel, NY Take a scenic tour of the Hudson River aboard River Rose (above), an authentic Mississippi paddle wheeler. The two-hour cruise encompasses sights like Bannerman Castle, the Catskill Water Aqueduct, and West Point. Newburgh Waterfront, Newburgh, NY Spend a peaceful morning walking among the butterflies at Greenburgh Nature Center’s annual butterfly exhibit, then take advantage of the Center’s open green space, walking trails, and playground (which has fun play spaces made to look like they’re part of the natural environment) for a full day of kid-centric fun. Greenburgh Nature Center, Scarsdale Westchesterites, it’s basically a mandate that you go to Playland at least once each summer. Ride the Dragon Coaster, brave The Whip, cool off on the Playland Plunge. Since today’s Tuesday, it’s half-price admission after 5 pm (Thursdays are too). If you go on a Friday, stay into the night for concerts and fireworks.

We may be biased (again), but Westchester Magazine’s Best Of Westchester event at the Glen Island Harbor Club in New Rochelle is always the best party of the summer. Sample goods from our county’s most popular food, drink, entertainment, and services vendors at this year’s soiree, which honors more than 300 winners. It’s National Hot Dog Day! Get a single or double with special mustard from Walter’s in Mamaroneck—a time-honored Westchester tradition—or try some adventurous toppings, like mac ’n’ cheese or s’mores, at Dobbs Dawg House in Dobbs Ferry. It’s not summer in Westchester until you’ve spent at least one night on the patio/tiki bar at Sunset Cove, tucked beneath the Tappan Zee Bridge in Tarrytown. Get your cheap thrills (think paper plates and plastic cups of beer) starting with sunset Happy Hour, and stay into the night when the crowds get larger and the music gets louder. A pit stop at your local farmers’ market is a summer Saturday must.

Take home the best of seasonal produce at locations throughout the county including Bronxville, Larchmont, Chappaqua, Pleasantville, Ossining, Katonah, and many others. Experience the garden of your dreams—albeit at someone else’s house—as part of The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program. Today, tour three private gardens (in Bedford Hills, Cortlandt Manor, and Pound Ridge) for green-thumb inspiration to use for your own garden. Catch a summer blockbuster (with popcorn and soda, of course!)—Minions, Jurassic World, Entourage, and Pan are likely to be big draws. If art house is more your style, you’ll find an indie flick or foreign film in Pleasantville at the Jacob Burns Film Center or at The Picture House in Pelham. Beat the dog days of summer and spend a day inside at LEGOLAND Discovery Center at Westchester's Ridge Hill. Since it’s Tuesday, you get discounted tickets to the fun (including rides, play and building areas, and a 4D movie) when you visit between 10 am and 2 pm. LEGOLAND Discovery Center Westchester, Yonkers
