"If all goes well with inspections we will be open next week," said Vincent Malerba, who walked family and friends through the newly refurbished space. The dining digs and handsome bar area stand in a space formerly occupied by Bonefish Grill, a Mall tenant that suddenly vacated the spot in 2014. Vincent and his wife, Melinda, had the option of keeping Bonefish's fixtures which were still intact when they leased the location. But as the place took shape, they loved the idea of a rustic look. Wooden chairs take on an pleasant, unrefined character. Place settings include a basic linen cloth folded into a square, a mason jar and rectangular dish intended for Angelina's own hot bread loaves served with fresh ricotta cheese and cracked black pepper. The service team is in place. Baldo Manno is the manager -- he has been a familiar face at Angelina's Ristorante in Tottenville as a waiter.
And Baldo's wife Chiara, Boston-born with roots in Sicily, crafted the recipes. While some dishes find inspiration from favorites at Angelina's mother location, the menu will be executed under the direction of chef Mario Esposito. Waiters, all from Italy, showed off their uniforms -- caps, Angelina's embroidered jean aprons, plus t-shirts marked with Italian words on the front and back. The menu, says Vincent, keeps a patron well-fed at affordable prices. Appetizers such as Fried Calamari, Meatballs, Baked Clams, Ring Sausage with Broccoli Raab, a "Sicilian Plate" of rice balls and panelle aka chick pea fritters, Antipasto for Two and Marinated Mixed Olives, to name a few items, range in price between $4 and $18. Soups like Pasta Fajioli, Lentil, Pollo alla Parmigiana and Minetrone cost $7 for a bowl. There are salads -- Caesar, Arugula, Chopped Salad, "Insalata Stromboli" and Baby Kale with Apples and Craisins -- for $12 or less. Pastas, 14-inch pizzas of the white, red sauced and veggie varieties plus meat entrees ring up less than $20 per plate.
And there are a host of deals. Vincent excitedly talks up the "Giro Pizza Menu," an all-you-can-eat pizza special for $32 per guest with tax and 20 percent gratuity additional. All draft beer and soda are included. There is a two-hour time limit for such a regimen and meals must be consumed in the dining room with a six-person minimum in a two hour time frame. That menu sees its choice of apps -- wings, rice balls, olives or salad -- plus a choice of three select pizzas. (There is a $6 upcharge for gourmet pies like prosciutto-arugula, Meat Lovers, Clam and the like.) Then, there is the "Sunday Sauce" program for $28 per patron with a six-person minimum -- starting dishes of olives, garlic bread, eggplant rollatini and salad followed by rigatoni with meatballs, brasciola and sausage. Family-style packages are $40 per and $50 per guest with beer, wine, sangria, coffee, soft drinks and dessert platters included with a three-hour limit plus tax and 20 percent gratuity added.
