View more information »A chair that author JK Rowling sat on while writing the first two Harry Potter books has sold at a New York auction for nearly $400,000 (£283,000).The 1930s piece was one of four mismatched chairs that the British author picked up for free in Edinburgh, Scotland, before she rose to fame.Ms Rowling originally auctioned the chair to benefit her charity in 2002.She hand-painted the chair, which auctioneer James Gannon said made the piece so valuable.

It features the phrases: "O, you may not find me pretty but don't judge on what you see" and "I wrote Harry Potter while sitting on this chair". A letter from Ms Rowling was included with the sale. The letter reads: "I was given four mismatched dining room chairs in 1995 and this was the comfiest one, which is why it ended up stationed permanently in front of my typewriter, supporting me while I typed out Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. My nostalgic side is quite sad to see it go, but my back isn't."The chair's new owner has chosen to remain anonymous. The seller, Gerald Gray, from Salford in Greater Manchester, said the winning bid far exceeded his expectations."I plan to donate 10% to JK Rowling's charity, Lumos, because that's what she did in the first place," said Mr Gray. He bought the chair in 2009 after his daughter, a Harry Potter fan, saw it on eBay.E ach year SOME holds a Gala to celebrate our work, to present the SOME McKenna Humanitarian award and to support our programs.

Tuesday, April 4th 1:00pm Tuesday, May 9th 1:00pm Tuesday, June 6th 1:00pmIf you’re facing a bout of writer’s block, this chair might be the solution. While at first glance it may not seem like much, it is the seat upon which J. K. Rowling penned Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone outside of the U.S.) as well as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the first two books in the celebrated Harry Potter series.

These early novels by the British author gave the world its first encounters with the now-iconic characters of Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Professor Snape, and, of course, He Who Must Not Be Named. Now, you may have a turn to sit upon Rowling’s literary throne and dream up your own Wizarding World as the chair heads to auction later this month.Hosted by Heritage Auctions, the sale will mark the chair’s third time on the block, having sold most recently for $29,117 in 2009 at a charity auction benefitting Books Abroad. This time around, bidding will start at $45,000 for the piece, which was custom-painted by Rowling herself before the chair’s first sale, also for charity, in 2002. On both legs of the 1930s-era oak seat, which the author admits is something more suited to be purchased by a “junk shop tenner,” matching lightning bolts pay tribute to the scar of the same shape found on hero Harry Potter’s forehead. Inscribed along the sides, it reads, “I Wrote Harry Potter While Sitting on This Chair,” with “Gryffindor”—the Hogwarts house Potter and his closest friends belong to—written below.
