Click here to read moreDental crowns are expensive for the following reasons:They are custom-made by a laboratory. The laboratory's fee is included in the price of the crown.

3. 20% of a crown typically goes straight to the laboratory. To add onto this, you must realize that Dentists go through 4 years of an undergraduate program and 4 years of a Dentistry program. They have overhead costs for their business. Among these overhead costs are liability insurance, worker's (assistants, front office, hygienist) wages, electricity, and rent/mortgage. When you go and get a tooth extracted, there is no cost to the dentist in terms of laboratory fees and it is typically a much quicker procedure. There is no crown prep work to be done.I get asked this question all the time but in a different way, I always get asked why is there such a price variation in dental crowns, I am in Orange County CA and I can tell you that the price range for dental crowns goes from $350 to $4000 per crown in a 15 mile radius.  I will also tell you that a reasonable charge for a crown should be $900 to $1200.   Most patients are blinded by what makes a crown so expensive, is it the lab cost, the material used, etc...

I would like to tell you that although the crown material and the lab that makes it is important the most important factor of crowns are the margins and the fit. A crown acts as a cover on a tooth to protect the tooth structure underneath, it also adds strength to the tooth if the tooth has a root canal performed, having said this, if the crown fails whether you pay $200 or $1000 you've wasted your money.  Therefore when you pay for the crown the majority of the cost you're paying for is the workmanship of the dentist performing the treatment, the time and detail in creating the perfect structure under the crown and the absolutely perfect impression to send to the lab in order to have a crown that does its job. The margins are the areas when the crown meets the gumline, this area must be very precise if the margins are too long, it goes under the gumline and irritates the gums, if the margins are too short, they are not covering the toothstructure properly and protecting what's underneath the crown "open Margin".

This talent is based on the dentist performing the treatment, I had a crown done years ago and the dentist left a gap between the crown and the tooth in front of it "Open contact point", this made food get stuck in that area and now my perfectly fine tooth in the front had decay and needed to be fixed.  Besides workmanship there's various materials that change the price of the crown, metal, high noble metal, porcelain over metal, porcelain over high noble metal and what my dentist uses and it's the best Zirconia Crowns, they're very strong and very natural.  All I can say is quality treatments and products do cost more, some are rediculous but $1000 is very reasonable, mine charges $1200 and his work is worth every penny because I've never had an issue.  I hope my information will help you judge the workmanship or at least provide you with enough information to ask the right questions about crowns when you're faced with the cost to pay.  Here's more information about Zirconia Crowns.

/...I can offer a cheaper dental crown but would have to send the work to a cheaper dental lab. The cheap porcelain crowns not only look cheap because they lack the proper shape, surface texture and translucency, but they also break more easily because they were not made at accurate porcelain firing temperatures. There are many ways that a dentist can cut corners such as sterilization methods, dental diamond burs, hand piece quality and impression and bonding materials. However, I have been in the same location for over 30 years and can honestly say that cheap porcelain crowns are really the most expensive for the patient over time because they fail much sooner. Patients get root canals that could have been prevented. Bad porcelain crowns get decay faster, teeth are lost and bites collapse with cheap dentistry. See Porcelain CrownsI am proud to say that my “expensive” dentistry has saved my patients a lot of money, a lot of time in the dental chair, are treated in the cleanest and safest high tech dental facility anywhere, live healthier lives, need less drugs and don’t suffer from premature aging.
