Deckchairs for Hire - the History In all the years that we have been selling deckchair canvas by the mile (and the odd deckchair too!) we have been asked many times to hire them out for events, weddings and other festive party venues and concerts. With our efforts since 2007 to bring the deckchair back in all its glory, our deckchairs are made and quickly sold, leaving none available for hire. Now all that has changed - we have now acquired ALL Blackpool's iconic deckchairs in their beach worn and sand-tossed original glory. All 6000 of them, along with all the windbreaks, ticket machines and the incredible history behind them! We will be able to offer small to large volumes of hire, anything from 4 deckchairs to, well, 6000!

Each deckchair will be re-worked with new metal fittings for strength without removing the integrity of the original patina. We are able to send out for hire with the original worn plastic covers, or replace with new in the same modern equivalent. Otherwise for Luxury Deckchair Hire we would be able to cover to order with any of our striped deckchair fabric - either mixed colours or all the same whichever your preference. All deckchairs are guaranteed original deckchairs from Blackpool and may carry the initials BCPD The history of Blackpool as a boom resort town before and between the wars and up to the 1960's is fascinating story and well documented by many writers including Bill Bryson. The enduring image of postcard humour, knotted handkerchiefs, fish and chips and seaside landladies are the stuff of legend. At its peak, Blackpool Council within a period of three years (1958 - 1960) banked over £6 million in CASH from the takings of deckchair hire alone. See our blog on Deckchair Hire

The beach and seafront here have been a major draw for a hundred years and whilst the Blackpools fortunes may have ebbed and waned the town's character essentially remains the same. Boasting seven miles of sand Blackpool seafront is home to three large piers and the 500ft tall Blackpool Tower. The main beach lies between the South and Central piers and is backed by a promenade. Along this strip run the well known trams which become the centrepieces of the Blackpool Illuminations at the end of every summer. The beach itself is a large expanse of flat sand, which becomes a vast expanse of flat sand at low tide. And rest assured, you can still get a donkey ride and hire a deckchair if you want. Now, an entrepreneur is taking 6,000 deckchairs out of storage in Lancashire in order to restore their original striped pattern - and make them available for hire. It would be an absolute travesty to lose this institution of the British summer.’ Hopwood’s new business Heritage Deckchair Hire was launched seven years after she founded Deckchair Stripes, which sells replacement canvas for company, based in Waverton, near Chester, Cheshire, took a revenue of £450,000 last year and now manufactures whole chairs in Britain.

Blackpool Council banked an astonishing £6million in cash from the takings of deckchair hire within a period of three years in the late FiftiesMs Hopwood added: ‘I was the person who introduced the deckchair back into Britain after they had been consigned to the shed with the arrival of plastic in the Sixties.‘I’m the only one mad enough to bring back Blackpool’s chairs now.’ She said Blackpool Council did not have enough funds to restore the deckchairs, but held onto them for some time – until she heard that officials were finally ready to sell them lastMs Hopwood said: ‘Until then, the council wouldn’t part with them for love nor money. To get them to relinquish a major asset like that was amazing.’ Seaside tradition: The beach and pier in Brighton, East Sussex, with rows of sunbathers in deckchairs, in 1955 On the beach: Holidaymakers in deckchairs at the seaside in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, in 1960
