Higher education in Britain is traditionally associated with universities. There are about one hundred universities in Britain. British universities are independent, self-governing bodies. They greatly differ from each other in the date of foundation, size, history, traditions, general organization, regulations, and student`s life. They can be broadly classified into three types the old universities, the civic and the new ones. The oldest and most famous universities in Britain are Oxford and Cambridge.

The admission to British universities is via a strict selection. For all British citizens a place at a university brings with a grant from their local educational authorizes.

Usually the course of studies at British universities last three years. The academic year is divided into three terms. The courses are a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and laboratory works.

After three or four years students take their finals. Those who pass examinations successfully are giver the Bachelor`s degree. The students who obtain their Bachelor`s degree can apply to take fun their degree course. There are two different type of post-graduate course the Master`s degree and Doctor of Philosophy.
