🔳📷Charles Thomas "Chuck" Close (born July 5, 1940) is an American painter, artist and photographer who achieved fame as a photorealist, through his massive-scale portraits.

Close often paints abstract portraits of himself and others, which hang in collections internationally.

Although a catastrophic spinal artery collapse in 1988 left him severely paralyzed, he has continued to paint and produce work that remains sought after by museums and collectors.

Close also creates photo portraits using a very large format camera.

Close has been represented by The Pace Gallery (in New York City) since 1977, and by White Cube (in London) since 1999. Already in 1999, Close's Cindy II (1988), a portrait of the photographer Cindy Sherman sold for $1.2 million, against a high estimate of $800,000. In 2005, John (1971–72) was sold at Sotheby's to the Broad Art Foundation for $4.8 million.
