Since the 1920s oil boom (which left a number of beautifully-restored Art Deco mansions and buildings in its wake) this town has been one of Oklahoma's greatest cities, and maybe even its most sophisticated. You just have to look at what Tulsa eats for dinner. Mainstream, boring, or 'blah' doesn't cut it here. Rather, southern food, Mexican food, barbeque, and upscale contemporary are the city's specialties. If you need to impress an out-of-town guest, look for the sophisticated side of the city's dining scene, which can compete with almost any city in the U.S.. It's out there, whether you're willing to try Lava Noshery, a gourmet contemporary eatery voted 'Best New Restaurant' in the city when it opened in 2007, or you just prefer to stick to the Wolfgang Puck Bistro for guaranteed good food.

If you want to see Tulsa do what it does best, there's no better choice than Wilson's BBQ, known for classic, tender, smoky Oklahoma barbeque. Another mouth-watering experience can be had at the Blue Dome Diner and Route 66 Mother Roadhouse, which takes 'road food' upscale. Other cities try to imitate down-home cooking, but in Tulsa it's the real deal. The Arkansas River criss-crosses the city. If you follow it, it will give you a thorough introduction to your new home. Hiking or biking the trail that runs alongside the river is a great way to get the lay of the land. You can also learn about Tulsa's wild side at the Oxley Nature Center, a wildlife sanctuary. With 800 wooded acres, it just might be a sanctuary for you too. It's also easy to take day trips out of the city to Oklahoma lakes for fishing and boating, to the Arkansas Ozarks for a bit of mountain scenery, or to Dallas and Oklahoma City for great shopping, if the sales rack is the only 'jungle' you'll ever cross. That's not to say you need to go to Dallas or OKC to shop.

If 'great shopping' is on your wish list as you search for a new home, just consider living close to Utica Square, a beautiful outdoor mall right here in Tulsa. Some of the most upscale stores in the area, including Anthropologie, Pier 1 Imports, Saks 5th Avenue, LOFT, Banana Republic, Bath and Body Works, and Williams-Sonoma are located in this shopping center. There's even a Starbucks so you can sip as you shop. If you feel most at home in a city that prizes the arts and culture, Tulsa may be your best bet in Oklahoma. In the Philbrook Museum of Art, you'll have access to a substantial collection of American art--including 15 Wyeth works-- as well as a large and varied collection of Native American art. Folks who prefer to live on the musical end of things will love seeing shows at the Bok center. Recent artists to perform here include everyone from Journey to Bassnectar, and from Bob Dylan to Carrie Underwood. Soon, Tulsa may not only be your new home, but also one of your favorite cities.
