Edit ArticleHow to Clean Baby Strollers Two Parts:Cleaning the FabricCleaning the Plastic PartsCommunity Q&A Strollers are one of the messiest parts of parenting, and can become home to dirt, grime, crumbs, and many other hard to define things. Keep your child safe and healthy and your stroller running at peak condition by cleaning it on a regular basis. Vacuum the material of the stroller. Begin by vacuuming any crumbs or loose items from the stroller. Use a handheld vacuum with an adjustable nozzle and be sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies of the stroller, including any pockets or storage areas. The dirtiest spot will likely be where the seat meets the back, as this is where all of the crumbs collect. Run your vacuum over that area multiple times to get all of the crumbs. Remove the fabric from the stroller, if possible. Check with your stroller’s owner’s manual to see if the fabric padding and seat can be removed from the frame. Some strollers have fabric pieces that are easier to remove than others.

For example, Bugaboo strollers can easily remove the fabric area, while BOB and Graco strollers can be removed by unscrewing bolts around the frame.[1] The fabric padding on Britax strollers, however, cannot be removed from the frame. Once the fabric has been removed, consult the owner’s manual for cleaning instructions. Figure out whether to machine wash or hand wash the fabric. Some fabric areas can be cleaned on the gentle cycle of a washing machine, and others need to be hand-washed. The key in determining the correct washing method is to check the stroller’s owner’s manual or contact the stroller manufacturer—two strollers made with the same type of fabric can have completely different washing instructions depending on the style and sewing patterns of the stroller. No matter how the fabric is cleaned, it needs to be hung to dry so it doesn’t shrink. Don't use the dryer. Alternatively, take the stroller outside to clean. If the fabric can’t be removed, clean it while attached to the stroller frame.

Take the stroller outside and use a hose to wet and rinse the entire stroller. If you don’t have access to a hose, take the stroller to a large open space or park and use buckets of water. Use baby-safe laundry detergent and a sponge to wash the entire stroller. Don’t be afraid of getting your stroller wet or scrubbing it hard—strollers are designed to withstand all of the elements. Leave your stroller outside to dry. Remove and wash any detachable plastic accessories. Remove all detachable plastic accessories, such as the cup holder or snack tray. These items can be cleaned with dish soap and warm water and disinfected with any baby-safe cleaning product. These products are typically labeled as being “baby friendly”, “organic”, or “chemical free”. Avoid cleaners with lots of harsh chemicals. Disinfect the plastic parts several times a year. Strollers and accessories naturally build up germs throughout the year as your child gets sick and as you visit public places with lots of other people.

Disinfect the stroller a few times a year, as well as each time your child is sick. After cleaning, let the pieces air dry completely before attaching them back to the stroller. Repeat the cleaning process for each part of the stroller. Do the same thing for the plastic frame of the stroller—take it outside to wash and disinfect all parts. Warm water and a sponge can help remove the dirt, and then disinfect the frame with a baby-safe cleaner. If necessary, use a toothbrush to reach into the tight spaces and remove all of the dirt. Clean the wheels and rims with baby wipes or disinfectant cloths. If the wheels are squeaky or sticky, spray them with WD-40 or a natural lubricant silicone spray, available at most natural stores, to loosen things up. Be sure to spray the lubricant when the stroller is outside or in a well-ventilated area. If the tires have air, check the pressure and refill if necessary. Check for leaves and twigs. Put the stroller back together.

Once everything is clean and dry, put the fabric pieces back on the stroller frame and reattach the cup holders, trays, and other accessories. Spray the entire stroller with a disinfectant spray, followed by a deodorizing spray like Febreeze to keep it fresh and new[5]. Show more unanswered questions A stroller should be cleaned at least a few times a year, more often in the warmer weather when it is easier to clean and the stroller gets more use. To keep things in good shape between cleanings, store the stroller in a dry, clean place such as an inside closet or the trunk of a car. A clean stroller can be like a breath of fresh air and helps your child stay healthy and safe on their many adventures.
