kitchen chairs or other products of your own company? Wooden kitchen chairs require regluing at times to repair loose joints. Wooden kitchen chairs stand up to a lot of use over time. Daily moving of a chair, as well as sitting down in it, adjusting your position while sitting, and moving the chair again to stand up all eventually loosen glue joints that hold the chair together. The same loosening occurs for the occasional kitchen chair held together by bolts and wing nuts. Proper repair of a glued wooden chair requires removing all the old glue while taking care not to scrape away any of the wood. The more wood that is removed, the harder it will be for the glue to create a tight fit. Wiggle the chair that has loose joints to find the loose areas. Set a dropcloth on the ground, then flip the chair over on top of it. Wiggle each chair leg and every piece of wood on the chair to get a better view of what needs repair. Look closely at the chair to determine if it has been glued together or fastened with bolts and nuts or wing nuts.
Even if the chair has a bolted-on block in each corner underneath the seat, it is most likely glued together -- the block exists to support the seat. If you've assembled the chair yourself or recall the legs attaching with bolts and nuts or wing nuts, then you'll know it is not the glued-together type. Tighten loose nuts on a bolted-together chair by tightening with an adjustable wrench. Skip this step if the chair is glued. Tighten wing nuts by hand, then recheck the legs to ensure they're tight. If you notice no difference after tightening everything, the chair has glued joints. If the chair is the bolted type and is tight now, you've finished fixing it. Tug at the loose chair joints to separate them. Remove every loose piece from the chair. Gently tap at the pieces with a rubber mallet if they're difficult to remove, noting the proper location of each piece for easier reassembly. Scrape old glue away from the loose pieces with a utility knife, exercising care not to remove any of the wood.
Continue scraping until as much glue as possible has been removed from all pieces. Clean old glue out of the sockets that the chair parts push into using a metal pipe cleaning brush. Blow the loose glue out onto the dropcloth, and wipe the insides of the sockets with your finger to remove any remaining particles. Fit the chair back together without glue to ensure the pieces are in their proper locations. Position clamps or strap clamps in each scraped area as a dry run to make sure the clamps fit and tighten the way you'd like before gluing. Disassemble the chair again. Apply glue to the scraped areas on a chair piece and in the sockets where it belongs. Press the piece piece firmly back into its sockets, wiping away excess glue with a rag. Repeat the process with each chair piece until the entire chair has been reassembled. Set the chair right side up and clamp the glued areas together. Tighten the clamps and check the glued joints for glue overflow. Wipe away any glue that runs from the joints.
