The Natal Alu sofa is from the Tribu collection at McKenzie & Willis. Not so long ago, our outdoor furniture usually comprised a table and chairs with a market umbrella. And maybe a sun lounger by the pool, if we had one.But that's not what's been happening over the past couple of years. Now, we're all taking a more laid-back approach to outdoor entertaining – literally. Sofas and low tables re-create living rooms outdoors, so we can lounge about in comfort. And that's exactly how Jayne Cross-Hunter of furniture importer and manufacturer McKenzie & Willis describes the trend. "It's comfort, comfort, comfort," she says. "With the outdoor area becoming a second living space for many people, designers are pushing for fully upholstered seating for the outside. Brands, such as Manutti and Tribu offer premium comfort and design, with furniture that can stay outside all year round." The Mode outdoor collection from Danske Mobler is one of the company's all-time top sellers. That's another change in recent years.

Technology has improved materials to such an extent that furniture can be left out in the rain, and the materials will dry quickly.READ MORE * Maximise your outdoor living area so you can enjoy it through all seasons * How to accessorise your outdoor living area * Five things to avoid when planning your outdoor living area The Tribu Pure sofa from McKenzie & Willis reflects a move towards natural materials. "Customers can now expect to sit on an upholstered seat 10 minutes after rain," says Cross-Hunter. "With the furniture featuring Quick-Dry Foam and fully UV materials, customers can invest in pieces that will last."Powdercoated aluminum furniture and frames are also providing very low-maintenance furniture with a sleek, European look. "When you meet the designers of these pieces, you find that they come from an engineering and architectural background, which is clearly reflected in both the frame construction and product longevity." The Bahamas five-piece setting from Danske Mobler in grey tones is right on trend this summer.

Ron McCrorie, store manager of Danske Mobler, Three Kings, also says people are opting for two- and three-seater sofas with low, glass-topped coffee tables, and wicker furniture remains the biggest seller for the company's outdoor collection. "The wicker is made from the highest-specification PVC that is UV treated. It has been tested for 3000 hours of direct sunlight, so we know it doesn't break down. The furniture comes with powdercoated aluminium frames that are unaffected by the weather." McKenzie & Willis is also seeing a trend towards a mix of wood and metal materials, such as teak and aluminium. "Charcoal greys and crisp whites used with these materials add warmth and bring nature in," says Cross-Hunter. Mylez Moss of Freedom Furniture says it's all about creating a balance between the "refined nature of indoor furniture and the sturdiness required outdoors". "This versatility means that many of this season's outdoor pieces wouldn't look out of place inside your home."

SHADES OF GREY What about colour? All the suppliers say it's grey all the way this summer. "It's very much light and dark grey that's finding favour," McCrorie says. "Even the cushions are in light grey and taupe tones. And the sun umbrellas that are most popular are charcoal and black. We tried light grey, but that wasn't as popular for umbrellas." Sophistication has a place outdoors as shown in this Jati & Kebon dining furniture from McKenzie & Willis. It's a conservative, sophisticated look that appeals to many people. Meanwhile many of the large homeware stores are stocking piles of outdoor cushions in white, with bright blue, yellow, red and green geometric patterns, so you can add a punch of colour if that appeals."We're also seeing a lot of geometric patterns and nautical broad stripes," says Moss. "Classic blues and teals teamed with lots of greenery in the outdoor space will also be a popular look this summer, as is the retro-chic Palm Springs vibe represented by pastel hues.

And woven materials are set to be popular this season, bringing natural and organic elements into outdoor living spaces, while robust, solid timbers and materials like concrete will also have their time in the limelight."Outdoor dining is here to stay, however, and not everyone wants to eat their food on their lap. "A big emphasis for many people at this time of year is the Christmas table," says Cross-Hunter. "They may have the extended family coming over, and are interested in our selection of extension dining tables with glass tops." Soft grey tones with white are a popular combination for summer 2016, says Danske Mobler. Freedom Furniture has also noted a fun trend this summer. "Many people are incorporating a playful element to outdoor spaces by setting up a backyard games area, from the classics like boules or croquet to Giant Jenga and Swedish Kubb," says Moss. A table setting, such as the Alelphi from Freedom Furniture, is ideal for a smaller space. This corner sofa is by Jati & Kebon, from McKenzie & Willis.
