Assistant Professor - Acting and Directing Mark Baer is a lifelong actor, director and producer with a passion for the communities that living theatre creates and cultivates.  After gaining a BS in Theatre Performance from The University of Findlay (OH), Mark traveled the Midwest acting with many theatre companies in small communities including Virginia Shakespeare Festival (Williamsburg, VA), The Warehouse Theatre (Greenville, SC), Kentucky Repertory Theatre (Horse Cave, KY) and Commonweal Theatre Company (Lanesboro, MN).  Favorite roles include Toby Belch in Twelfth Night, Joshua in Anouilh's Ring Round the Moon, and Hovstad in Ibsen's An Enemy of the People. In 2002, Mark became of Managing Director of St. Croix Festival Theatre, a small professional theatre in St. Croix Falls, WI.  During his tenure, Festival Theatre produced over 20 plays and musicals including the anti-war drama There Shall Be No Night by Robert Sherwood, under Mark's direction.

His time in St. Croix Falls only served to strengthen his resolve that live theatre can make a difference in small town America. Mark received his MFA in Directing from Illinois State University in 2010.  His ISU productions included The Winter's Tale, Timberlake Wertenbaker's Our Country's Good, and Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods.  Professional directing credits include The Nightmare Room at the Towle Theatre (Hammond, IN) and To Fool the Eye by Jeffery Hatcher, Once Upon a Mattress by Mary Rogers,  Man of La Mancha by Dale Wasserman at St. Croix Festival Theatre.  University guest artist directing credits include the regional premier of Bhopal by Rahul Varma at Illinois State University and The Birds by Aristophanies at Eureka College.  He looks forward to productions of Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with St. Croix Festival Theatre, and Frankenstein with Chicago Street Theatre. In the fall of 2011 Mark accepted an appointment as Asst. Professor of Acting and Directing at Indiana University Northwest.

IU Northwest directing work includes Reckless by Craig Lucus, Wiley and the Hairy Man by Suzan Zeder, Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl, Dracula by Steven Dietz, and Timothy Mooney's adaptation of The Miser by Moliere.  In addition to regular production work, he frequently organizes workshops with Chicago theatre professionals as well as visits to Chicago theatre experiences of all types.  His primary goal as a faculty member is to help students develop positive collaborative relationships with each other and the performance community at large. In 2013, together with a group of local performers, teachers and theatre buffs, Mark became a founding Board Member of Gary Shakespeare Company.  After a successful opening production of King Lear at IU Northwest, GSC has found a home in the Miller Park neighborhood of Gary and is preparing for a full season of Shakespeare and other plays that celebrate language, in which Mark will be directing Twelfth Night or What You Will.  His work with GSC is evidence of his continued belief that live performance has the power to transform performers and audience alike.
