Until recently, most people thought that bed bugs were just an old wives tale, and until recently they practically were. Bed bugs, once eliminated in the United States, have continued to thrive in other parts of the world. With increased travel, bed bugs have been able to move from other parts of the world into our country.  They are able to get around the world in under a day, just like us. Most people relate infestations to large cities, especially those that are hubs for travel like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, but smaller cities are now plagued by bed bugs almost as much as these larger cities.  This is a problem which will not go away on its own. The other factor that has helped bed bugs to gain a foothold in this country is the change in application methods of pesticides. Baseboard spraying that was once prevalent helped to prevent bed bugs from moving into hotels and homes. Newer methods, such as insect-specific baits and crack-and-crevice treatments–which are good for the environment and are effective against most pests–are not as effective against bed bugs.

Our treatment methods use the latest materials and application methods designed to treat bed bugs where they live and hide. We focus on all the areas bed bugs frequent such as bed frames, head boards, nightstands and other furniture near the bed.  As you can see with our preparation guidelines, getting rid of bed bugs is no small undertaking. See the sections below for a more detailed description of preparations needed and what we do to eradicate your home of these most disgusting pests. Do not remove any items from the infested area. This may cause infestation to spread. All furniture is to be pulled out from walls approximately 3 feet. Take down all pictures, clocks, mirrors and lean against wall in area they were removed from. Remove electrical outlet and switch covers. Leave in area of treatment. Remove drapes or other linens not attached to bed. Place in plastic bag in center of room for laundering. Remove books, papers and other contents from shelves and desks.

Place in laundry baskets or plastic bins to allow for inspection and treatment of both furniture and items. Do not use corrugated cardboard. Remove clothing and contents from all closets, dressers, chests, and nightstands. Place in center of room in sealed plastic bag for laundering. Shoes should be placed in plastic bin / laundry basket for inspection. Secure any private or valuable items as well as any firearms as we will be going through every drawer and closet. In children’s rooms toys, stuffed animals, games, etc. should be removed from drawers, shelves, under beds, and placed in plastic bin / laundry basket to allow for inspection. If allowed / possible items should be placed in dryer on high heat for 30 minutes. All items that can be laundered should be washed and dried at the highest allowable temperature according to manufacturer guidelines. Items which cannot be washed but can be dried on high heat should be dried in dryer for a minimum of 30 minutes. Items which cannot be laundered should be taken to a dry cleaner for proper care.

Any item which normally resides in the infested area should be present at time of treatment. wheelchairs, walkers, portable electronics, etc. Luggage should also be placed in room if travel completed recently. Vacuum all flooring under and behind items to remove dust, dirt, pet hair, or other debris which may harbor pests. Once completed vacuum bag should be discarded if present, or vacuum canister emptied and cleaned to remove possible bed bugs or their eggs. Bags should be taken to outside trash receptacles. Upon arrival of service technician, remove all bed linens to include: sheets, blankets, duvet, comforters, towels, stuffed animals, and bed skirts. Place in a plastic bag in room for laundering. We do not want to disturb the bed bugs causing them to scatter prior to treatment. Water beds or air mattresses (select comfort, etc.) should be drained or deflated prior to treatment and disassembled / opened to allow for treatment. These bed types will require a special encasement.

Pets should be removed from areas to be treated, however leave pet bedding in place for inspection. Bedding should then be washed and dried if possible to kill any bed bugs or their eggs. Fish tanks will need to be removed or covered and air supply shut off and tank sealed with plastic wrap prior to treatment. You will need to vacate the treated areas for a minimum of 3-4 hours for treatment. Your technician will advise you of a more exact time while there. This is a great time to visit a laundromat to wash all loads of clothes simultaneously. Do not tamper with any devices left behind. This may include monitors or mattress encasements. Do not bring back or introduce any new or unnecessary items to the treated areas until after follow up services or instructed by technician. Inspect all items when removing from bags or bins for signs of bed bug activity, if found keep sealed until next visit. Vacuum area approximately 24 hours after each service. This includes using a crevice attachment for corners of floors, along bed frames and mattresses, inside drawers, etc.

This will remove any dead bed bugs and their eggs. DO NOT apply any pesticides should you find bed bugs before or after treatment. Use a vacuum or other device to physically remove the bed bugs and discard of them immediately. The use of other pesticides may interfere with the materials we will use and prevent proper control. We will inspect all areas of the home that may be possible infestation points. We will help remove the mattress and box springs, to treat the bed frames and under and behind the bed. Mattress should be disposed of or encased with bed bug specific encasements. (We have these encasements available.) We will remove all drawers from furniture in the infested room and treat cracks, crevices and corners. We will treat inside furniture cabinets and if necessary move or turn over furniture to treat all accessible cracks, crevices or corners. We will treat underneath baseboards of the home with residual dust materials. We will treat inside switch and outlet covers with residual dusts to penetrate the wall voids.

We will treat any other cracks and crevices in the room such as, chair rails, curtain rods, closet shelves and rods. We will treat perimeters of the room with residual materials to kill bed bugs as they move around the room. If necessary we will treat adjoining rooms to infested room to prevent bed bugs from moving to untreated areas. In every case a follow up service (usually two) will be necessary to treat any problem areas again and double check the results of the initial service. Below is our Bed Bugs Control Frequently Asked Questions.  If you do not find the question and answer you are looking for please don’t hesitate to call us and we will answer all your questions on Bed Bugs Extermination. Are bed bugs real?Bed bugs which were once eradicated in the United States have been around in other countries. They are back because they are very adept at piggybacking onto travelers and can go around the world in less than a day. Do only dirty people get bed bugs?

Bed Bugs can be found in all types of homes and hotels. Five star hotels are just as likely to get bed bugs as a one star. The cleanliness of the hotel or home has no bearing on whether or not bed bugs will infest. How did I get them? Most people get bed bugs from travel. When staying in a hotel or home that is infested bed bugs will invade luggage or clothing to ride home with the host. Other ways that they can get in include, house guests bringing them, or bringing in used or infested furniture. I hear about heat treatment for bed bugs do they work? They are effective in the short term at killing bed bugs, but heat does not always eliminate 100% of the pests and without a chemical treatment they can be likely to come back. We have found that chemical treatments are the most effective overall treatment for these pests in both the short and long term. After treatment, how long until they are completely gone? Generally the problem is mostly eliminated after the first treatment.

We make a mandatory follow up part of the service to go back through the most heavily infested areas and make 100% sure that the problem is eliminated. Can I keep my mattress after the treatment for bed bugs? If a mattress is infested with Bed Bugs, we recommend that the mattress be removed and thrown away. If that is not a practical solution, then a specific “Bed Bug” mattress encasement should be used on both the mattress and box springs. If the encasement is not designed for Bed Bugs, they can slip through crevices or zippers with ease. We can supply these for you at an additional charge. What can I do to keep from getting bed bugs? Inspect your hotel room before you move your stuff in. Pull back the sheets and look at the mattress for bugs, eggs, or stains from their feces that look like rust spots. Check the headboards and nightstand drawers. Never buy or pick up a used mattress, and if necessary inspect furniture or other items brought into your home before entering.
