Jake Lofquist and his father, Dave, bought the business nearly three years ago. Though the latter still owns Economy Furniture in Chippewa Falls, the duo decided the Eau Claire store had to close. A liquidation sale currently isunder way. “We just haven’t made enough money,” Jake said. “Business is up 30 percent this year but is nowhere near its peak. It’s just not enough to make a go of it.” R.H. Loether founded Eau Claire Bedding Co. in 1895 to make and sell mattresses. In 1963, Henry “Happy” Atkins of Duluth, Minn., bought what had become Eau Claire Mattress Co. and opened factory-direct Happy Sleeper stores.
In 2003, the business declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy shortly after being acquired by Fort Atkinson’s Furniture Express. A year later, an Eau Claire factory that made mattresses and other items for the company was shuttered. Dave said a Happy Sleeper chain that once had 18 stores has now dwindled to a few that are operated independently. A lack of advertising before the Lofquists bought the Eau Claire store and the impact of competitors such as Ashley, HOM Furniture and Slumberland aided in the store’s downfall, he said. “When we bought it, I thought we could keep it going,” Dave said. “But the changes were more than I expected.” Nevertheless, he’ll continue to work in the industry at Economy Furniture, which has enjoyed five straight record years of sales. Jake is undecided about his next move, focusing instead on selling the remaining products at Happy Sleeper in Eau Claire. “I think so,” Dave said when asked if his son would stay in the business.
“He’s the dollars-and-cents guy. He’s very good at that.” New restaurant slated for River Prairie ALTOONA — The owners of Draganetti’s Ristorante and Taverna Grill are opening a new restaurant — Za51 — off River Prairie Drive in the River Prairie development. Za51 will specialize in the homemade pizza that helped their parents, Kas and Clara Draganowski, get their start in Wisconsin in 1951 when they opened the Enchanted Inn supper club in Barnes. The new restaurant will be owned and operated by three of the Draganowski children, Joanne (Palzkill), Claudia and John, who currently own Draganetti’s and Taverna Grill. The new venture will be a trattoria-style restaurant featuring pizzas, sandwiches, pasta and gelato. “Our hope is that Za51 will be our way to bring all that we’ve learned over the years together, thanks to the sacrifices and struggles that our parents initially made beginning in 1951,” Palzkill said in a news release. Kas and Clara opened Drag’s Restaurant and Roman Lounge in Rice Lake in 1961, which was handed over to their sons, Kenn and Jerry.
