I-40, will have 12,000 square feet of retail space for mattresses.“
That will make it the largest showroom (for mattresses) in the Panhandle,” Tramel said.Mathis Sleep Centers do not sell bedroom furniture, Tramel said, “but mattresses and associated products, like frames, sheets, pillows and adjustable bases.”The company was founded in Oklahoma City 54 years ago. It already has 15 locations in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and California. Two are in Lubbock.Amarillo’s new shop is right next to Denver Mattress Co. and its Furniture Row network of stores. Tramel said ease of access and visibility were bigger factors in choosing that location.“What could be better than being right off I-40 with easy in-and-out access in between the two busiest retail corridors in town,” Tramel asked.Tramel said Mathis Sleep Center has invested more than $3 million in the project, and the company has been studying it for a few years.“Amarillo really stood out in that there just weren’t a lot of great options for customers who wanted to shop in a more relaxing environment and still be guaranteed the very best deals,” he observed.
Mathis has its own mattress factory in Oklahoma City, which Tramel said cuts out the middleman and saves consumers money. He also said the stores carry a full line of name brands.“We are one of Tempur-Pedic’s largest accounts,” Tramel said.He also emphasized the store will continue the company’s low-key sales approach that doesn’t involve high stress and high sales.“The average person’s going to keep their mattress for eight years,” Tramel stated. “It’s a big decision.
