For a long time they were considered extinct in the United States, but they've experienced a major resurgence in the past few decades.
Bed bug control is now one of the most in-demand pest control services, especially in big cities like Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati. During the day bed bugs live in cracks, crevices, and voids in or near the room where the person sleeps, including quite often in the mattresses, box springs, and frames of beds, which is why they're called bed bugs. But bed bugs are often found in picture frames, under carpets, in wall voids or electrical conduit, or even in the tubes of roll-up window shades. Their small size and secretive habits are some of the reasons why they're so hard to control: Bed bugs can hide pretty much anywhere. They're also highly resistant to many common insecticides, and because they're blood feeders, don't pick up residual insecticides on their feet and ingest them the way that cockroaches or ants do. Bed bug problems are very difficult to treat using conventional pest control methods. Like all parasites, bed bugs are generally considered public health pests.
But it's not clear whether bed bugs in North America actually transmit disease.
