It’s cheap - from £15 for a bed (plus booking fee) You would be hard pressed to find a rail fare from London to Scotland for just £15 (plus 50p booking fee) - particularly one including a bed, power socket and Wi-Fi.

2. The decor is surprisingly tasteful Unlike the lurid blue-and-yellow livery of the classic Megabus, the Gold service’s interior is understated and pleasant. The rotund cartoon conductor advertising the company’s famous £1 fares has been replaced by burgundies and golds, not to mention some false oak panelling -slightly pretentious, perhaps, considering we are still travelling for 10 hours on a bus with a toilet the size of a broom cupboard. Nevertheless, it is far more luxurious than the moquette afforded to those travelling on the standard seated service. It's a far cry from the classic blue-and-yellow Megabus 3. It’s not the time to join the 4.38-metre High Club With less than half a metre of space above each bed and no privacy curtains, the 10-hour journey north is no time for snuggling up. • Hotels in Scotland for under £150 4. Bring a packed lunch - and no drinking The food and drink offering on board is spartan, with only blueberry muffins and bottled water rationed out to travellers at Victoria Station.

Want a nightcap to send you to sleep as you endure the snores of fellow passengers along the M1? It’s perhaps best to wash down your muffin with something milder - anyone caught drinking alcohol “will be ejected at the nearest service station and the police will be informed”. Fortunately for those seeking variety, a magical kist was cracked open at the Scottish border revealing a surprise supply of Irn Bru - Scotland’s de facto national soft drink. After all, nothing says "welcome" like a wee dram of fizzy orange liquid. • Edinburgh city guide 5. The staff are affable - but they probably won’t tuck you in Like most hardened public transport veterans, the staff are pleasant but take no prisoners - particularly when it comes to passengers who don’t have the correct tickets for travel. There are two drivers on board, and they swap halfway through the journey. Destinations served from London include Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow (Photo: AP/Fotolia) 6. The beds are quite comfortable - but you might have to share with a stranger

The Megabus Gold may share characteristics with a morgue, with every passenger assigned their own shelf, but the hammock-style beds are surprisingly comfortable. While the right side of the coach has one-up, one-down, the left side has a double "bed" on the bottom and a single on the top. If you're in a double, pray that no-one will get lumped in beside you – this happens sometimes and it is very awkward for everyone involved. • To Paris on the cheap: a Megabus journey for (just over) a pound 7. The convenience makes it all worth it When it comes to convenience, it’s hard to beat the Megabus. Travelling directly from city centre to city centre, it cuts out the need for awkward airport transfers or expensive express trains. London journeys generally start from Victoria Station - a stone’s throw away from Buckingham Palace - and go to nine Scottish locations (or Plymouth). You might have to spoon with a stranger and survive solely on muffins for the night – but it's all worth it when you get to where you're going with a night of sleep behind you, and plenty of extra cash in your wallet.
