Be the first to see new properties for sale in East London Apartments / Flats for Sale in East London More suburbs in East London Be the first to see new properties for sale inDick Strawbridge is rather proud of the fact he and his wife Angel are 'do-ers', which is why this evening they'll be enjoying a bottle of the Loire valley's finest on the front lawn of the sort of fairy- tale chateau the rest of us non-do-ers can only dream of.

They cashed in their property chips in England 18 months ago to venture forth for la belle vie in France with their children Arthur, three, and two-year-old Dorothy.'We moved here for the lifestyle, the food and the space,' says Dick. 'That was the priority — more space.'Well, today they have enough of that for a small army: 47 rooms, five floors, a private forest, pastureland and even a moat — all for the unbelievable price of £280,000. Dick Strawbridge and his wife Angel sold their two-bedroom flat in East London for £400,000 and bought a property with 47 rooms The unique property in Pays de la Loire, France, has 47 rooms, five floors, a private forest, pastureland and even a moatOr, as Angel says, the sort of cash you'd be lucky to get a one-bedroom flat for in London.Though, as in most fairy tales before you reach the happy-ever-after, there was a snag — or several snags. Chateau de la Motte Husson had no electricity, heating or water, not to mention the general state of decay given it had stood empty for 40 years.

That is where the do-er bit comes in.Dick and Angel set themselves a ten-month deadline to drag their 19th-century chateau into the 21st century, tackling most of the work themselves. Whatever the problem — be it a sewage system that emptied into the moat or a fly infestation — Dick, 56, resolved to overcome them.'He's fearless,' says Angel about her DIY Prince Charming. 'Dick's the sort of person who says where there's a will there's a way.'The most magic moment for me in the past few years was when I could flush toilet paper down the loo. I did a happy dance.'Needless to say, these aren't exactly your average expats. For £225,604 - a little more than the average UK house price of £211,230 - you could own this 18th-century castle near Saint-Lo in Normandy. It has six bedrooms, five bathrooms, a pond and is 20 minutes from the beach For the same price you could buy a studio flat in a 1970s block in Beaver Close, Hampton, south west London, for £224,950A retired lieutenant colonel, he forged a TV career on Channel 4's Scrapheap Challenge and then in three series of BBC2's It's Not Easy Being Green in the mid-Nineties, about the struggles of living an eco-friendly lifestyle with his first wife Brigit and their teenage children.

Meanwhile, Angel, 38, who ran The Vintage Patisserie, was charming investment out of Deborah Meaden and Theo Paphitis on Dragons' Den.The couple were introduced some years after his first marriage had ended by the agent who happened to represent them both.Much like with Chateau de la Motte Husson, Angel was smitten the first time she set eyes on him in 2010. The dream of a different paced life in France was born during a holiday there in the romantic fortified town of Carcassonne. Chateau - €448,000 (£378,189): This seven-bed manor house in Normandy - spread over 380 square metres - was renovated a few years ago. Located between the towns of Periers and Carentan, charming features include open fire places and stone spiral stairs Back home - £375,000: the same money would only bag you a 2-bedroom terrace (plus garden shed) in desirable Chalfont St Peters, in Buckinghamshire'We were staying in a picturesque house with a courtyard garden and when we looked in an estate agent's window we saw it was worth about 45,000 euros,' says Dick.'It made you think: 'Wow!'

You couldn't buy anything for that price in the UK. We began talking about the simplicity of living there with no mortgage and surviving on my pension and the royalties from the books Angel writes without the stress of working every waking hour.'It was then, though, just a fantasy, until Arthur was born and the reality of living in a two-bedroom flat in Bethnal Green, East London, with a young child and no garden set in.'All your time goes into earning money to pay the mortgage and survive. You have no time to live and anyone with young children living in a small space always wants more,' says Dick. You could either buy this six-bedroom farmhouse in the Tarn (Toulouse is just 45 minutes away) which has three bathrooms, a wine cellar and a pigeonnier (dovecote) for €493,500 (£416,141) For £400,000 you could purchase this three-bedroom detached house in Solihull, near Birmingham, West Midlands When Angel became pregnant with Dorothy, they sold the flat for £400,000, paid off their mortgage and with savings had a budget of £300,000 to begin the search for their dream home in France.'We weren't Francophiles,' says Dick, with his customary bluntness.

'We are 100 per cent British. This was an adventure.'We haven't come over here to become French in any way, shape or form. We celebrate what's good about France — the wine and cheese, but we have Union Flags everywhere here.'How does that go down with the locals? 'Oh we love our neighbours,' he says. 'But we're in the county of Maine, which was British as recently as the 14th century when we handed it back to the French, so the first time we met them I told them we were just taking back what was ours.' Just five minutes from the sea, this magnificent 15-room mansion in Brittany stands in one hectare of land and comes with a second house within the grounds and costs €546,000 (£460, 411) A similar budget of £450,000 would net you this smart three-bedroom home in a suburb of Warrington, with handy access to the M6 and M62They fell in love with this chateau before they had crossed the grand threshold. Their offer was accepted, they packed up the car and took up ownership in January 2015.

Within months, Dick had put in enough of the infrastructure — with help from local tradesmen — for the family to take up residence.'Working with the French builders was a bit trying,' he says. 'The French day rate is not for as many hours as you'd expect in London. Here they take two-hour lunches and knock off early.'We got an electrician along and in one day he managed to lay only a single cable. Others just didn't turn up. Our neighbours across the road are French and they reassured us it wasn't because we're English. They get ripped off as well and they've been here for 40 years.'Now we've got a local builder who is an expat and he puts in a day's work, so we've probably saved a third of what we'd have to pay a French company.' £500,000 will just about get you a 2-bedroom flat in London - such as this new build, in South Wimbledon For the same amount, £495,600, you could buy this amazing 50-room 17th century castle near the Mediterranean in Limoux. It needs some renovation, but features two towers, high ceilings, magnificent views and 1.3 hectaresMany of these trials and tribulations were broadcast on Channel 4's Escape To The Chateau, which saw Dick and Angel achieve their November 14, 2015 deadline — their planned wedding day.

As well as installing heating, electrics, running water and bathrooms, Dick had to shore up floors and repair walls and ceilings so the couple could have their big day in their new home. They intend to host weddings to help fund the renovation of the top two floors. But this happy-ever-after — and the Strawbridges are deliriously happy — was conceived before the Brexit Referendum. Aren't they just the tiniest bit concerned about the future?'It's not even worth panicking about,' says Dick. 'We're living here in our little bubble and we're happy as . . . as . . .' He searches for the right word. This beautiful 19th century manor house in the Pas-de-Calais has it all – nine bedrooms, plenty of land, and access to the chic town of Le Touquet and its beaches just half an hour away and costs £586,375 With a similar budget in Oxford, you could buy a terraced two-bedroom cottage half a mile from the city centre for £550,000'Yes,' he chuckles. 'Angel, I and the children are on our little island and we're so content and happy.'My most magical moment is when the children have gone to bed and Angel and I sit on the step of our chateau, have a drink and breathe for a little bit.'Do you know, we haven't heard a siren since we moved here 18 months ago.'Is there anything they miss about Britain?
