We are staying at Myrtle Beach Resort near Surfside. I don't want to pay a lot for them since they most likely will not be going back home with us (we don't have the room in the car). I prefer the ones that sit a little higher off the ground-not getting any younger, ya know :) Any of the various beach shops as well as Wal-Mart, CVS, etc.

Prices don't seem much better in walmart than the beach shops. Buy a local newspaper the first day there. Look for insert ads for places like CVS. Rite Aid etc. you can usually find decent prices that way. We usually try to buy the aluminum leg kind vs the painted legs. They last longer, can usually get 2 seasons use from them and only one from the painted kind. We leave chairs and umbrella for our guests to use, but if you plan to discard, it probably will not matter. Before you buy, check the unit you are staying in (open the closet/storage doors). Many units have beach chairs, toys, etc...Either the owners have them for their guests or previous renters bought them and left them at the unit. You might get lucky. You are less than 5 minutes from Wal Mart and a dollar store. They are on 544. Go there and get them. Thanks for all the replies! Never occured to me the unit might actually have some! That would solve the whole issue! I will check out some nearby stores for chairs for some good deals if nothing else.

Glad to hear the prices seem to be pretty much the same wherever. 3 more weeks to go....is it too early to pack?? Edited: 10:13 am, June 16, 2010 Is Myrtle Beach really dirty? Is it worth buying couple of beach chairs from a local walmart instead of paying exoensive rentals at Hale Koa Hotel, where we will be staying for 6 days?

Is there a walmart in Honolulu btw? It's well worth buying a cheap beach chair from either Walmart (of which there is one right behind the Ala Moana center), or checking out what is available at the ABC store (of which there is one on just about every street corner...in fact if I were to look outside now, I could see 2 of them :-)) At the ABC, you can find some beach mats, or alternatively, inflatable beach chairs; both of those cost anywhere around $3-$5 each. Admittedly, the only area that we have investigated in Walmart is the grocery section, so I do not know the range of beach items they have there. Since you are staying at Hale Koa, would you qualify for the military rate which is $5 for the day? For 6 days it will only be $30. I think that's reasonable compared to buying a not so comfortable cheap chair which you have to lug around between hotel room and the beach. Although buying a beach chair is good if you plan to take it while visiting other beaches around the island.

The answer really depends on what you prefer and what your budget allows. We rented 2 chairs and a large umbrella a few times, which were delivered and set up for us in our choice of locations. l like that option because you can just get up and walk away when you've had enough sun. Totally a personal preference. We did look for beach chairs a few years ago and they were surprisingly not as inexpensive as I'd expected. What about when you travel around the island...are there options at other beaches for rentals? We're spending 8 nights at the HHV and just wonder about the rental vrs buying experiences. To my knowlege, the only place you'll find chairs for rent will be along Waikiki and perhaps at Turtle Bay or in the Kapolei area. We usually sit on the sand or a low wall at other beaches. One destination mentioned in this post We are civilians, so the day rental for civilians for a beach chair is $10/chair per person, so for 6 days for 2 people it will be $120, which is rather steep.

I think we will decide once we are there, depending on the prices of decent beach chairs from walmart etc. You get the Hale Koa rate just by showing your room key at the rental place right behind the hotel on Ft DeRussey beac. Our son-in-law got it, and he was a civilian guest of ours staying at the hotel. fy, adjustable and reclineable. It's a great investment for comfort on the beach. We buy chairs every year and then give them away on the beach on our last day. We look for people that don't have any, or rent any....go up to them and ask if they would like a couple chairs (with umbrella). The standard answer is "how much?" and we say "free, enjoy your stay". The appreciation they have is priceless and a great ending to a fabulous vacation. Pay it forward if you do invest in your own chairs. We bought beach chairs at Wal-Mart and our hotel gave us towels for the beach. I am puzzled as to why rental chairs are taking space up on the public beach before they are rented out.

Its so nice when they are all packed away late day. Buy some inexpensive beach chairs, lawn chairs or folding lawn chairs from Walmart for about $10 each. You can take them to any beach on Oahu. You can leave them in Waikiki at Sans Souci beach for the homeless before you leave.
