Eames Demetrios wears many different hats, but he is best known in the design world for his work as director of the Eames Office spearheading the successful re-discovery of the Charles and Ray Eames design heritage by new generations. The mission of the Eames Office is communicating, preserving and extending the work of Charles and Ray Eames. Among his many achievements in this capacity is the multimedia component of the Library of Congress/Vitra Design Museum Eames exhibition, the thinking curriculum for Scale is the New Geography, The Essential Eames Exhibition at the Art and Science Museum in Singapore, the re-introduction of many Eames furniture pieces, and the release and video restoration of the Eames films. In addition, he works closely with Vitra and Herman Miller to be sure the Eames furniture is always made authentically and was instrumental in the founding of the Eames Foundation that preserves the Eames House (he is Chairman of the Board). He has also written several books about Charles and Ray Eames—Including An Eames Primer, intended as a thematic biography of their life, work, process and philosophy, now widely used by schools and available in three languages.
Most recently he has collaborated with AMMO books on Beautiful Details, created a fourth film that celebrates the Eames Elephant through animation and in the winter of 2014 produced the exhibition Ray Eames in the Spotlight at Art Center College of Design.In addition, Demetrios is an artist and filmmaker. His current large-scale project, Kcymaerxthaere, is a multi-pronged and ongoing work of 3 dimensional fiction and has been underway for 11 years. The project can be found in stories set in bronze markers and historic sites--like a novel where every page is in a different city. His recent exhibitions include the Man& Eve Gallery in London, UK, and served as artist in residence at the Halsey Institute of Art in Charleston, SC. In 2014, more Kcymaerxthaerean installations are scheduled for Indonesia, Columbia, and Cyprus including a major installation in New Harmony, Indiana. He has published 4 books (Wartime California, Discover Kymaerica Travel Guide, Discover Leddl & Parts of know Estrelliia, Please Don't Connect the Dots) centered on this project.
In addition, Demetrios has made over 60 films and videos of various lengths over the past 25 years or so. Themes and topics include a fiction feature on homelessness, a documentary on Sambo Mockbee’s Rural Studio, and the Malibu/Old Topanga Fire. His most recent purely film projects include the Powers of Ten of Wine, Ping Pong--capturing the design process of Frank Gehry, and Carnival in Chiapas, about the modern Maya of southern Mexico. His work is in a number of private collections and that of University of Georgia. His film and video works have shown at numerous museums and festivals: Library of Congress, Gulbenkian (Portugal), Smithsonian Institution, MOCA (LA), LACMA (LA), Meguro Art Museum (Tokyo), Film Forum (LA), Sundance Film Festival, Cairo Film Festival, and dozens more. Grants received include the Long Beach Open Channels grant (for video art), the Peter Norton Foundation, Ox-Box [BOW] College Artist-in-Residency and others.Demetrios also gives talks all over the US and internationally (43 countries spanning 6 continents) on many subjects, ranging from design to science, scale to his own work.
He was a TED Conference Main Stage speaker in 2007.No matter which hat, he brings out the adventurous side of his creative partners, institutions such as the Sinapore Museum of Art and Science, Portugal’s Gulbenkian Foundation, and businesses like Universal Studios and Interface, Inc (a billion dollar flooring company run on sustainable principles). Projekt Vitra, Vitra Campus, Vitra Design Museum und Vitra Haus sind gängige Begriffe aus einer einzigartigen Unternehmensgeschichte, die zeigt, dass dieser Hersteller weit mehr ist als ‚nur’ ein Möbelanbieter. Am Anfang stand authentische Faszination: der schweizerische Unternehmer Willy Fehlbaum entdeckte 1957 auf einer USA-Reise verschiedene innovative Stühle des Anbieters Hermann Miller, deren europäische Vertriebsrechte er sich aus spontaner Begeisterung sicherte.
Viele der epochalen Designklassiker von Ray und Charles Eames oder George Nelson sind heute immer noch populär, werden mit Liebe zum Detail gefertigt und sind für die Wahrnehmung von Vitra prägend. Im Jahre 1977 übernahm Rolf Fehlbaum die Leitung des Möbelherstellers und machte Vitra durch die enge Zusammenarbeit mit bekannten Designern wie Ray und Charles Eames zu einer der weltbekanntesten Möbelmarken. In dieser Zusammenarbeit entstehen bis heute in schneller Folge neue Vitra-Produkte, die immer wieder Designgeschichte schreiben. Eines dieser zeitlosen Produkte ist der Panton Chair aus dem Jahr 1967, mit dem Vitra Designgeschichte geschrieben hat. Die ersten Entwurfsskizzen, die auf den Panton Chair hinweisen, entstammen aus den Jahren 1958/1959. Durch seine große Experimentierfreude mit neuen Materialien ist es Verner Pantons Verdienst, den ersten, nur aus einem Material und einer Werkzeugform hergestellten Stuhl geschaffen zu haben. Seitdem hat der Panton Chair mehrere Materialvariationen durchlaufen, um die Stühle nach ökologischen Gesichtspunkten zu optimieren.
Vitra – in starker Partnerschaft mit Cairo Als Vitra Campus hat sich der deutsche Firmensitz in Weil am Rhein in den Herzen der Architekturliebhaber fest eingenistet. Die Neubauten sind ursprünglich aus der Not heraus entstanden – nach einem Großbrand entwickelte sich unter der Leitung von Rolf Fehlbaum der Vitra Campus zu einem lebendigen Architekturpark. Auf dem Vitra Campus ist unter anderem das Vitra Design Museum, der erste Bau des Designers Frank Gehry in Europa, zu sehen. Im Vitra Design Museum gibt es neben wechselnden Themenausstellungen auch die allerersten Vitra-Stühle zu sehen. Apropos: Vitra Stühle sind aus der Welt des Büros nicht mehr wegzudenken und haben diese nachhaltig geprägt. Vor allem die Eames-Stühle aus der „Aluminium Group“-Reihe findet man häufig in Büros, obwohl diese anfangs für den Wohnbereich konzipiert wurden und den Namen „Leisure Group“ trugen. Alleinstellungsmerkmale dieser Eames-Stühle sind die viersternigen Füße und der zwischen den zwei Aluminiumstreben verspannte Leder- oder Stoffbezug.
