The proper cushion will help prevent sores and make the wheelchair easier to maneuver. There are 3 types of cushions: gel, foam and air filled. Foam cushions are the most common and are used for people who aren't likely to develop sores. They are approximately 2 inches (5.1 centimeters) thick.
Gel and air filled pads vary in thickness and are primarily used for people who have developed sores or have a tendency to develop them. Follow these steps to measure a wheelchair cushion. Write down all the measurements for the seat cushion in inches or centimeters. Remove the existing cushion. Measure the inside width of the wheelchair seat. Do not take the measurement from arm to arm because the measurement will be too wide, resulting in a cushion that's too wide for the seat. The measurement must be taken from side to side on the inside of the chair. Measure the seat with the chair's user in the seat. Taking measurements while the user is sitting in the wheelchair will result in more accurate calculations. Measure from the user's outside hip on 1 side to outside hip on the other side to determine the proper seat width. Add 2/3 of an inch (2 cm) to the measurement to allow for extra comfort, bulky clothes, and for getting in and out of the seat with ease. Calculate the depth of the seat.
Determine the seat height of the wheelchair. The correct cushion is determined, in part, by the height of the seat. The proper seat height is calculated by measuring from the inside of the knee when sitting in the chair to the sole of the foot. The user's feet should rest comfortably on the floor or foot rests after the cushion is installed. Decide if the foot rests will be used by the person sitting in the chair. Use of the foot rests will make a difference in the thickness of the cushion you should purchase. Calculate the thickness of the cushion. Most seat cushions are 2 to 2 1/3 inches thick (5 to 6 centimeters). The measurement is from the top, where the person's bottom will sit, to the underside of the cushion, the part that's touching the chair. Add the thickness of the cushion to the seat height measurement. The combined measurement should be the same as the measurement from the inside of the knee to the sole of the foot.
