Private equity firms and their portfolio companies employ more than 11 million people in the US. How can the industry leverage its hiring power to help employ America's veterans? On November 14-15, 2016, TPG co-hosted the 2nd annual Private Equity Veterans Initiative Summit in New York with Blackstone, Carlyle, and KKR, an event dedicated to supporting hiring and retention of veterans among firms and portfolio companies. Ed Norton, Senior Advisor at TPG and Vietnam Veteran, at the 2016 Veterans Initiative Summit “This event demonstrates a shared belief among leaders in our industry that hiring veterans merits special focus. These highly capable employees often lack access to job opportunities because they haven’t followed a typical path into the business world. But helping place veterans in jobs is only part of the solution. Ensuring they succeed by providing ongoing education, mentorship, and sponsorship is essential. Having mentored veterans over the past decade, I see immense value in a forum like this, which fosters connection and facilitates networking between veterans from different backgrounds.

TPG is proud to be part of it.” —Jon Winkelried, Co-CEO of TPG This year’s summit was focused on the Veterans Initiative Playbook, a detailed guide created to help companies not only recruit and hire veterans, but also give them the support and mentorship they need to succeed. TPG’s ESG team hosted a breakout session focused on the Playbook, and the firm was proud to welcome representatives of portfolio companies with strong veterans hiring initiatives, including Bruce Mosler, Chairman of Global Brokerage of Cushman & Wakefield Inc. and Chair of the company’s Veterans Initiative. Cushman & Wakefield is the world’s largest independent real estate services firm, and Mosler’s team is working toward a goal of having veterans make up 10% of the total workforce. Also in attendance was Todd Bowers, director of the UberMILITARY program at Uber, which aims to put $500 million in veterans’ pockets by 2020. With more than 75,000 self-identified veterans and military family members driving for the company, they are well on their way to their goal.
