The simple style dates back to the 1850s when the chairs came out. The sleek, curved chairs offer a stylish bistro appearance to any kitchen or dining room, and restoring antique bentwood chairs to their former glory is a satisfying endeavour. The chairs come in many shades of wood, including light tan, dark brown, and black. Buyers paint the chairs to create a colourful addition to any home. For broken, split, or simply old and worn out bentwood chairs, there are several options for renewal and restoration.

Pick up chair restoration supplies at a home repair shop or for a low price on eBay. Since bentwood chairs go back to the 1800s, it is not uncommon to procure a chair that is hundreds of years old. Over time, the wood breaks down from use or from exposure to the elements. Repairing bentwood chairs is the first step to complete chair restoration. Original bentwood chairs had hand-woven cane seats, but replacing a torn or broken seat is not time consuming. Remove the existing cane seat by unscrewing the bolts on the side of the chair's frame. Cut the woven cane seat away from the frame and remove the chair's spline. Purchase a piece of new cane that fits the chair, or cut a piece of cane to fit the chair. Buy wood glue and a new spline for the broken chair. Use wedges to fit the new cane over the chair seat. Once the cane is in place, remove the wedges and use wood glue to adhere the cane to the new spline. The chair needs to dry overnight before using. Use a sharp knife to cut away any excess cane, and then paint the seat to look antique, if desired.

Wobbly legs are a common bentwood chair issue, and repairing them is not difficult. To fix unsteady chair legs, remove the legs. Use a rubber mallet, screwdriver, or hammer to ease the joints apart. Scrape the old glue from the inside of the joints with a pipe cleaning brush, and sand away glue remnants with sandpaper. Then, glue the legs back to the chair with epoxy. Re-gluing the legs creates a new bond which is stronger than the existing bond and should fix unsteady chair legs. Fill in any holes with wood putty. To fix splits in bentwood chairs, first make the wood susceptible to repair by wrapping hot cloths around the split area. The heat should make the wood more flexible. Continue this two or three times with fresh hot cloths until the wood seems pliable. Add pipe clamps to the area to force the wood back into place. Allow the pipe clamps to remain on the chair overnight. Next, undo the clamps, and then brush wood glue into the split. Press the wood firmly back together and replace the pipe clamps while the wood glue dries.

Once the glue is dry, remove the clamps, fill in any cracks or holes with matching wood putty, and then sand and polish the entire area to camouflage the split. Bring bentwood chairs back to their former beauty with some final small repairs and restoration steps. First, repair any slight scratches in the wood. To do this, use a wax furniture crayon to fill in the scratches. Another option is to use a matching paint and a small paintbrush to gently fill in the scratches. Once sealant is applied, the scratches are no longer noticeable. Use steel wool or sandpaper to buff away scratches, but take care when using either option to ensure it does not scratch the chairs further. To refinish the chairs and renew them, use sandpaper on the chairs fully or use a hand sander. Wipe away dust and debris with a microfibre cloth. To stain the chairs, use a compatible colour of wood stain. Allow the stain to dry. Apply a sealant to add polish and shine to the chairs. Most of these are polyurethane based.
