A guest at the Simi Valley Senior Center's free Thanksgiving dinner for the past few years, Jeff Goldstein said the food and live music don't compare to the youngsters who volunteer to make the holiday special for those who otherwise might not celebrate. "How many kids do you see today who care about anybody else other than themselves?" said Goldstein 70. In contrast, numerous children and teenagers served food, filled drinks and performed other tasks Wednesday night at the center. "Look at these children. This is what it's all about," Goldstein said. "These children will be where I am in 50 years. Hopefully, they will be around to have kids do for them what they're doing for us now." Goldstein and his wife were among 500 seniors who received a free Thanksgiving dinner, thanks to an effort sponsored by the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise. "If they're spending Thanksgiving alone, at least they're not alone tonight," said Dan Jaeger, a Rotary member and event co-chair. "Rotary is a worldwide organization.

We are also concerned with the needs of our community," Jaeger said. "We want to bring people of our community together in fellowship around the holiday to make it more enjoyable." About seven years ago, the Thanksgiving dinner was open to seniors and their whole family, said Laurie Dickinson, senior services manager at the center. "But it's become so popular, now it's just for seniors," Dickinson said. Wednesday's 23rd annual dinner was made possible by the Simi Valley YMCA, which provided the manpower to prepare 50 turkeys that were donated by Golden State Water. Smart & Final gave a discount on food, and table linens were provided by All Valley Rentals. Drinks were provided by Jewish American University, and Rotary members baked 80 pies. "It's such a wonderful collaboration. Everybody helps out," said Stella Ortiz, event co-chair, adding that the $2,000 food bill was covered by Rotary. "We actually have three generations here," Ortiz said. "We invite the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to sit with the seniors, just to converse and spend time with them."

Volunteer Manolo Wrinkle, 11, stood in the food line for those who were physically limited. "Some of them are alone or don't live with their family, so they need to have a Thanksgiving dinner," Manolo said. Wednesday marked the first year of volunteering for Cub Scout Thomas Johnson, 8. "It makes me feel good that I'm helping people," the boy said. Simi Valley Mayor Bob Huber helped serve food. "It's such a wonderful thing to do for the seniors," Huber said, emphasizing his gratitude to Rotary for putting on the annual event. "Seniors can come in and have Thanksgiving dinner with some camaraderie. A lot of them would be alone otherwise," he said. "This is part of the spirit of our community. This is what makes Simi Valley special."Wedding Rentals for an Elegant Wedding with European Flair We had the honor of collaborating with some of LA’s top vendors at a gorgeous wedding at Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Simi Valley recently.
