He emigrated here with his mother from Athens, Greece when he was 12 years old. He went on to attend Denbigh High School and then graduated from the Automotive Training Institute of Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1980.Upon receiving his certification, he opened his first repair shop in 1983, G & N Performance, on Route 60. This shop is known today as Impact Automotive and CARQUEST of Williamsburg Auto Parts. Gus also owned Colonial Amoco for a brief period during 1989-1992. In 1995 he opened a shop in Athens, Greece called Multi-Car Service, offering fuel injection diagnostics and repairs.
