For Dennis Burke, who had just bought the business and moved it across the street, they were heady days when customers were "waiting at the door" to buy capiz shell lamp shades and round-backed "peacock" chairs."People would walk past the shop and whistle (the song)," he says."At one stage there were three cane shops on Gouger St."They were magic days. There was healthy competition and it helped."Mr Burke, 71, is reminiscing about the shop he handed over to his nephews Phil and Marcus Sweet in the '80s and became an Adelaide institution.But after nearly 40 years, Cane Corner's run is nearly at an end. The Sweets, who plan to clear their stock and close by Christmas, say trade has slowed over the past year and the last straw was the removal of their loading zone for a bus stop six weeks ago."I think our (older) demographic have worked all their life to go on holidays and they are still doing that, they are just not replacing their furniture," Phil Sweet says."We'll be debt free and we'll walk away knowing we gave it 100 per cent."
Marcus Sweet says the reaction from customers to the closure has been gratifying."People say you are an iconic business, you are part of the fabric of Adelaide. We mean something to people even if they are not buying," he says.They are thankful for the loyalty of many customers."People buy a suite and it lasts for 20 or 30 years but they come back every 10 years and buy new cushions," Marcus Sweet says.Cane Corner opened about 1975 on the northeast corner of the Gouger St/Morphett St intersection, before moving east along Gouger St and finally back to the southeast corner of the same intersection 15 years ago.Mr Burke and his nephews say more modern furniture styles have become more popular than cane and are philosophical about the closure."Everything has a life and a run. I found a cute run down, old rattan chair on the side of the road that I thought would look great with a little TLC. White furniture certainly fits with the decor in my home so I thought it best to remove the mint and replace it with clean, crisp white. A simple spray paint job did the trick.
